Dec. 19, 2004

Final Stats

Buena Vista. Fla. - A strong second-half comeback was too little, too late Sunday afternoon as The Rock dropped a 71-62 decision to eighth-ranked Lake Superior State (Mich.).

The loss dropped SRU's record to 4-5. LSSU improved to 7-1.

Stacey Green was The Rock's leading scorer with 12 points. Kristen Bonner added eight points, all in the second half.

The Rock got a strong effort from its bench as Amanda Chojnacki scored eight points, Jess Caso and Anett Fekete had seven points each and KellyAnn Staudinger six.

Lake Superior State went on a 16-9 run in the span of just less than four minutes late in the first half to take a 43-22 lead into the halftime intermission.

The Rock hurt themselves by turning the ball over 10 times and shooting a frigid 29 percent (9 of 31) in the first 20 minutes of action. LSSU, on the other hand, shot 54 percent from the field in the first half.

Lake Superior State extended its lead to 25 points before The Rock roared back to cut the margin to 10 points (68-58) with three minutes left to play.

The Rock was unable to close the gap any more, aside from a layup by Amber McFeely just prior to the final buzzer that cut the final margin to nine points.

SRU shot 50 percent from the field in the final half to finish the game with a 39.7 percent efficiency.

Sunday's game was the first of two The Rock will play on back-to-back days in the Milk House at Disney's Wide World of Sports.

The Rock will conclude its Florida trip and look to snap its four-game losing streak when it takes on No. 17 Hillsdale (Mich.) at noon on Monday.

SRU is then idle until Jan. 4 when it will travel to Bloomsburg for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" game.

The Rock returns home on Jan. 8 for a 1 p.m. game in Morrow Field House against Cheyney. SRU then hosts Millerville the following day (Jan. 9) at 1 p.m. Both of those back-to-back games will be PSAC interdivisional contests.
