Final Stats
Glenville, W. Va. -
Glenn Reepmeyer did everything humanly possible to lead his team to victory Friday night, but the effort again went for naught.
Reepmeyer scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds, blocked five shots and had three steals -- all team-high totals -- and also handed out two assists in The Rock's 80-67 loss to Mars Hill (N.C.) in opening-round action of the Theras-Pro Tournament at Glenville State College.
The Rock battled back from a 17-point halftime and 21-point hole early in the second half to close to within one point with six minutes left, but could not complete the comeback and lost for the fifth time in as many games this winter.
Mars Hill evened its record at 5-5.
The Rock goes back in search of that elusive first win on Saturday when it will meet the tournament's host team, Glenville State, in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
Bill Johnson added 15 points and three assists and Ben Daniels had 10 points and five rebounds in a substitute role to complement Reepmeyer's effort.
SRU led throughout the first seven and a half minutes of action Friday night before Mars Hill snatched away the lead en route to a 43-26 halftime advantage.
The Rock's deficit grew to 21 points, 49-28, a minute and a half into the final stanza before SRU came roaring back.
Johnson scored 12 points and Reepmeyer 11 to key a 28-10 run by The Rock in the next eight minutes as SRU trimmed the deficit to three, 59-56, with 10:38 left to play.
The Rock cut the gap to one, 63-62, at the 6:16 mark before Mars Hill outscored SRU by a 17-5 margin down the stretch to record the 13-point winning margin.
The Rock shot 57.9 percent (11 of 19) from the field in the first half and 52 percent (13 of 25) in the final 20 minutes to finish the game with a red-hot 54.5 percent efficiency.
