Junior forward Glenn Reepmeyer scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots Thursday night to lead The Rock effort in a 71-61 season-opening loss at Ashland University.
Senior guard Bill Johnson added 14 points, six steals and four assists, while junior guard Jason Bratten chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.
The NCAA Division II Rock will look for its first win of the season on Tuesday when it travels to Division I Youngstown State for a 7:35 p.m. game.
The Rock stayed with Ashland for the first 30 minutes of action and led by a 53-48 margin with 9:33 left to play before Ashland wrestled away control.
The Eagles scored 16 unanswered points in the span of six minutes to take a 64-53 lead at the 3:19 mark. The Rock was never able to trim the margin to less than eight points the rest of the game.
The score was tied twice and the lead changed hands 10 times during the game.
SRU outscored the hosts in the paint (30-24), off turnovers (15-10) and on second-chance points (15-8) but was outscored in fastbreak points by a 7-2 margin and in bench points by a 14-6 margin.
The Rock, after turning the ball over only five times in the first half, had 12 second-half mistakes.
SRU held a 34-33 edge at halftime.
