Bill Johnson scored a game-high 28 points to lead Slippery Rock University to a season-opening 93-90 victory over visiting Glenville State College (W. Va.) in a non-conference college men's basketball game Saturday night.
Jason Taylor added 20 points for The Rock while Jajuan Davis had 19. Glenn Reepmeyer grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Andrew Harding's 20 points paced Glenville State's attack. Jermaine Higginbotham added 19, Jonathan Burge 18, Kenyon Jones 15 and Briant Taylor 12.
The Rock jumped out to an 18-8 lead after five minutes of play and held a 45-33 halftime lead. Glenville State then turned the tables and outscored SRU by a 30-9 margin in the first seven minutes of the second half to take a 63-54 lead with 13:00 left to play.
The Rock tied the score at 83-83 on a three-point jumper by Bill Johnson with 1:50 left to play and then took the lead for good 25 seconds later on a pair of free throws by Davis.
The Rock returns to action next Friday, Nov. 21, when it will take on Mercyhurst in the opening round of the Mercyhurst tournament in Erie.
