Former Slippery Rock University women’s basketball student-athlete Sorriyah Ranger will begin her second season as a graduate assistant on head coach Bobby McGraw’s coaching staff in 2018-19. As a graduate assistant, Ranger will assist McGraw in all facets of running the program.
Ranger served as a student-assistant for McGraw a year ago while finishing up her coursework towards a bachelor’s degree in psychology, which she completed in December of 2016.
In Ranger’s second season following her transition from player to coach, she helped coach The Rock to 12 wins and a berth into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament. The Rock’s 12 wins a season ago were the second most in a season by a Rock team dating back to 2006-07 season (12 years). Ranger also helped mentor All-PSAC West honoree Brooke Hinderliter while assisting on a Rock team that ranked third in the conference as a team in rebounds per game, fourth in blocks per game, fourth in field goal percentage defense and in free throw percentage.
Prior to entering the coaching ranks, Ranger played in 52 games, 16 of which were starts, in two seasons for The Rock. Over her career, Ranger averaged 1.2 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while playing 14.5 minutes per contest. One of SRU’s primary post presences, Ranger blocked 35 shots over her two-year career for The Rock, the 14th most in school history.
Ranger was part of McGraw’s first recruiting class at The Rock. She helped lead SRU to a PSAC Tournament berth in 2014-15, the first for an SRU team in nearly a decade, as well as 13 wins in 2015-16, which were the most by a Rock team dating back to the 2005-06 season.
She came to Slippery Rock after spending two years at Southwestern Illinois College, where she led SWIC to a 48-12 record and back-to-back region 24 championships.
