Slippery Rock University alum Jon McCune will begin his fourth season as an assistant coach at The Rock in 2021. McCune will once again work with the tight ends on head coach Shawn Lutz’s staff.
Â
In 2019, McCune helped coach a Rock team that went 13-1, won Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, PSAC West and Super Region I championships while appearing in the national semifinals and finishing the year ranked sixth in the nation by the American Football Coaches Association.
Â
In 2018, The Rock’s primary tight ends (Zach Cirillo, Aramis Alexander and Jesse Nwabueze-Ogbo) combined to catch 31 passes for 225 yards and five touchdowns in addition to being key blockers on one of the top offenses in Super Region 1.
Â
No stranger to SRU, McCune served as a student assistant at The Rock from 2008-10 before elevating to the role of defensive graduate assistant and quality control coach for two seasons in 2011 and 2012. McCune graduated from Slippery Rock with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education in 2010 and a master’s degree in Resource Management in 2012.
Â
After his first stint at The Rock, McCune went on to become the baseball recruiting coordinator for Meadaille College (2013-14) before returning to the gridiron as the offensive coordinator for Southwestern High School (New York) in 2015. He then spent the 2016 season as the wide receivers coach at Amherst High School (New York). Prior to returning to Slippery Rock, McCune was named the head coach and offensive coordinator at Moniteau High School for one season in 2017.
Â
McCune and his wife Karli have two daughters, Leila and Maisie.
