John Stemper

After a prep career in which he was a standout soccer, basketball, gymnastics, baseball, and volleyball player, Stemper arrived at Slippery Rock and continued to be a multi-sport standout as a member of The Rock’s soccer, track, gymnastics, and baseball teams.

By the time he left Slippery Rock, Stemper had earned 11 letters (three in soccer, three in track, three in gymnastics, one in basketball, and one in baseball).

Stemper, who was named Slippery Rock’s Senior Athlete of the Year in 1954, was recognized for his outstanding play in soccer by being named an All-American on two occasions while also earning a spot on the All Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Delaware twice.

Upon graduation from Slippery Rock, Stemper moved to Richmond, Virginia where he taught health and physical education at Bainbridge High School. In addition to his teaching duties at Bainbridge, Stemper also coached baseball, basketball, and gymnastics.

In 1994, he was inducted into the Carbon County chapter of the Pennsylvania State Hall of Fame.
