An abbreviated version to catch up on some accumulated notes …

• Good to see Rock alums Tom Stabile and Joe Costello down in Florida while on spring break with The Rock baseball team. Both ex-Rock hardballers look healthy and happy, although both complained about not hitting the little white ball very well. Oh, to have those kind of “problems.” Let me add: They did not complain about hitting it several days every week.

Congrats, again, to Tom on his selection as the head linesman for Super Bowl XLVI (46) in early February. We are truly proud of him and his accomplishments as a "zebra" and his continuing support of Rock athletics.

Which leads us nicely into a short list of Rock-related individuals recently spotlighted:

Joanne Leight. The former two-sport (field hockey and softball) Rock student-athlete and head softball was inducted March 21 in the Hall of Fame at her alma mater, Pennridge High School. Leight, a 1983 Pennridge graduate who later earned her doctorate from Duquesne University, coached The Rock softball team from 1997-2006. She currently serves as a professor in SRU’s physical education department and has established herself as a nationally known author and speaker on instructional technology.

Chris Logan. The former Rock men’s and women’s soccer assistant coach was recently hired as an assistant coach at North Dakota State University. Prior to being hired at NDSU, Logan served one season as the top assistant coach, goalkeepers coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh. He was an assistant coach at SRU from 2007-10.

Jim Shiel. The former Rock football player (1981-82) was recently hired as head football coach at Fort Cherry High School in Washington County, Pa. (south of Pittsburgh). He ascended to the top position after serving as FCHS’ seventh- and eighth-grade coach last fall. Prior to that, the 1981 Fort Cherry graduate coached 11 seasons at Brunswick County High School in southern Virginia. He began his coaching career as a varsity assistant and junior-high coach at Fort Cherry following graduation from SRU.

Rita Belavic Harrell. The 2008 SRU Athletic Hall of Fame inductee and former Rock women’s basketball standout announced her retirement at the end of the current school after serving nine years as athletic director at Shannon Forest Christian School in Greenville, S.C. She was a 1974 graduate of Slippery Rock.

Matt Adams. The former baseball standout and national Player of the Year as of March 28 had played in 14 of 21 spring training games with the St. Louis Cardinals and was batting .278 with one double, one triple, two home runs and eight RBIs.

Until next time …

GO ROCK!!
