Hi, this is Erica Aiello from Columbus, Ohio.
Last week our team traveled to the University of Michigan and Bowling Green State University for a pair of exhibition games. It was a great opportunity for us to take the floor before our official season began here at The Rock on November 10th. What an unbelievable experience from start to finish with 16 amazing teammates.
When we first boarded the bus, that’s when it instantly hit me, I was on my way to my first collegiate basketball game. I’ve never been on a bus like this; TV’s everywhere, comfy seating and food!!! We watched the movie “Mean Girls” and I quoted just about every scene. After a little nap and some food in my system, I was ready to get off the bus and prepare for the game!
After we arrived at the Crisler Center (the home of Michigan Basketball) we had a chance to do a quick tour of the facility. The first thing I did was step onto the court; I looked up and just took it all in. I was standing on the newly polished floor with the lights beaming down on me. All of their NCAA Championship banners were hanging above the court and I was excited to play against an amazing team. As we were getting ready in the locker room, I was a bit nervous, but mostly just anxious to get out there and play. When coach walked in, we knew we were ready for the game to begin.
After the pep band played the National Anthem, the players were announced. The first five took the floor and there was no looking back. From every angle (the bench & on the court), it was exciting to be a part of it all. Michigan was a great opponent and they gave us an amazing experience. After the game was over we hopped back on the bus and traveled to our hotel in Bowling Green, Ohio. At the hotel conference room we went over our scouting report for our next game. We then gathered our clean uniforms and headed to bed.
The next morning we met for breakfast and boarded the bus for our shoot around. Entering the Stroh Center at Bowling Green was just as exciting as Michigan, just not as big. The facility was great and the people were very friendly. We suited up for the game and took the floor with the same intensity as the last one. We supported each other and gained a lot of experience. When the clock hit zero in the second half, we had our post game talk and boarded the bus back to Slippery Rock. The ride was a little quieter this time because I think we were all a little tired from the busy weekend.
Overall, we had a great experience and it’s something that I will never forget. Our team became closer both on and off the court. It was good to see where we are and where we need to go as a team. We have set the bar very high for ourselves and I know that we have a great season ahead of us!
