Lou Trivino
recently showed the 4-1 record and 2.53 earned run average he compiled last spring as a freshman on The Rock baseball team was no fluke.

The lanky (6-foot-5) right-hander and second-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division performer for veteran Rock boss Jeff Messer tossed a complete-game, seven-inning no-hitter in July for the Quakertown Blazers of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League. He struck out seven and walked three in the process of polishing off the gem against the North Jersey Eagles.

“It was cool,” Trivino said in a story that appeared in his hometown newspaper. “It’s cool to get a no-hitter in a pretty good league. It’s not like teams are just randomly throwing guys out there.”

Trivino’s last no-hitter was as a senior at Upper Bucks Christian High School, where he was a two-time conference MVP. He was the first player in Quakertown Blazers’ history, which dates to 1977 as the Allentown Wings, to throw a solo no-hitter.

“He just dominated that team from first pitch to last,” said first-year Blazers manager Lee Saverio.

Trivino was the ace of the Blazers’ staff. He has compiled a 5-1 record for Quakertown with a 1.47 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 43 innings.

“He’s been everything as advertised,” Saverio said. “He’s been our No. 1 guy all year. He throws strikes, he’s got good stuff and he battles”

In related news and notes:

• Former Rock player Anthony Williams was named today (August 11) as the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg’s head baseball coach. Williams became just the fourth head coach in the 13 year history of the NCAA Division III program.

Aside from being the Bobcats new head coach, Williams works in the Video and Advanced Scouting department for the Pittsburgh Pirates where he is responsible for assisting with preparing advanced scouting reports and video for the Pirates Major League Affiliate.

Williams has also gained coaching experience as an assistant coach at both NCAA Division I Maryland Baltimore County and Division III Frostburg State University.

Prior to joining the Frostburg State staff, Williams worked as an intern with the Bowie Baysox “AA” affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles and the Baseball Factory, a recruiting service for high school players.

Williams earned his MBA from Frostburg State and owns a BS in sport management from SRU.

• Saying “it’s time for a change for some of the kids and for me,: former Rock pitcher Brett Livingston recently stepped down as head varsity baseball coach at Carlisle High School.

Livingston led the Thundering Herd to back-to-back appearances in the District 3 Class AAAA playoffs and earned Carlisle Sentinel “Coach of the Year” honors last spring. In six years as the head coach, Livingston compiled a record of 42-74, but his teams qualified for the 3-AAAA playoffs three times.

• Former Rock wrestler Gavin Bannat recently stepped down as head wrestling coach at Wayne Valley High School in New Jersey.

Bannat guided the Indians to 177 wins in 15 seasons as their head coach and was named as the Passaic County Coaches Association “Coach of the Year” last winter after leading his team to its second county championship in the last three seasons.

Prior to being named as head coach at Wayne Valley, Bannat served one season as head coach at Palisades Park High School and as assistant coach at both Jefferson (his alma mater) and Hopatcong high schools, all in New Jersey.

• Former Rock gymnast Hugh Crocker passed away June 13 in Grove City after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Crocker, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Slippery Rock in 1952, was a former United Methodist district superintendent of the Johnstown District. In that role, he watched over approximately 40 ministers in a three-county area. He also served many years as a PIAA basketball official, a role in which he undoubtedly worked with a lot of sinners.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Crocker’s family and friends.

That's all for now. Until next time ...

GO ROCK!!
