Sports Information Blog Homepage
On behalf of Jon Holtz, our Assistant Sports Information Director, and Tyler McIntosh, our graduate assistant, welcome to the inaugural posting on The Rock Sports Information Blog. We hope you enjoy reading these snippets of information on past and present Rock student athletes and teams as much as we will writing them. Our Blog is designed to be a "catch-all" to help make sure items of interest to Rock alumni and friends don't slip through the proverbial crack. Our blogs will complement our posting of news stories and event recaps on The Rock athletic web site, and also supplement blogs written by current Rock head coaches and student athletes.
Here's our first entry. Watch for updates to our blog at least once a week and for blogs from Rock coaches and student athletes in the days and weeks to follow.
• 1989 SRU graduate and 1997 SRU Athletic Hall of Fame inductee
Gordon Vietmeier, head golf pro at The Club at Nevillewood, recently tied for low professional honors at the 2010 Nike Las Vegas Pro-Am golf tournament. Vietmeier had a three-day total of 204 to share the top spot with Butler (Pa.) Country Club pro Rob McClellan and Pine Creek Golf Center pro Gene Walter.
• The 2000 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division champion Rock football team will be among the many groups gathered Saturday for SRU's Homecoming game at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium. The 2000 Rock football senior class won four straight PSAC-West championships, earned three berths in the NCAA Division II playoffs including an appearance in the 1999 national semifinals and recorded a 41-9 overall record and a 23-1 mark in PSAC-West action during its four-year collegiate career.
• Wish we could be there tomorrow for the grand opening of "The Mac," but work responsibilities preclude it. The James McFarland
Recreational Sports Complex, located at the corner of Branchton Road and Harmony Road, is named in honor of
"Gym" McFarland, a grad school prof and longtime mentor of mine. Congratulations and best wishes to grad school classmate/Campus Recreation Director
Greg Sferra, his able assistant/boss
Karen "Hammy" Perry and their staff.
• Congrats also to
Dick Hudson, former Rock baseball student athlete and 2006 SRU Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, a 2010 recipient of an SRU Distinguished Alumni Award. A well-deserved honor for a great friend and supporter.
• Former SRU football student athlete and administrator and current Board of Trustees member
John Hicks asked we pass along news that former Rock football student athlete
Bob "Shuk" Shuker, after having some rough times, is recovering well from Gilliam Bare ailments. Shuk and his wife, Mary, thank everyone for their prayers and support. Friends can contact them at marymccss@comcast.net.
• A final. solemn note: Sincere sympathy to one of our colleagues,
Dr. Betsy McKinley, chair of SRU's Physical Education Dept., on the passing of her father. Betsy and her family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Have a great weekend and hope to see many of you at Homecoming.
GO ROCK!!
