Rock faces West Liberty in home opener

The Slippery Rock softball team takes the field for the first time this season at Kasnevich Field as it hosts West Liberty for a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Fans are reminded that there are NO PETS allowed at Kasnevich Field or in any SRU Athletics facilities. Please do not bring dogs or any other pets to the game. Unless they are a registered service animal, you will be asked to remove your pet from the facility.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST WEST LIBERTY
Slippery Rock and West Liberty have played seven games all-time, with The Rock holding a 4-2-1 record against the Hilltoppers. SRU won the first two meetings, followed by two West Liberty victories. In the last three meetings, Slippery Rock claimed two wins and the sides tied their most recent affair (due to darkness).

This will be the first time in program history that Slippery Rock will host West Liberty.

LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock finished its annual Florida trip with a 5-3 record. The five wins in eight games are the best start to a Slippery Rock season since 2018. A sweep over the West Liberty Saturday, would match The Rock's best start to a season since 2014.

THE ROCK IN HOME OPENERS
SRU holds a 25-21 record in the first home game of the season. Last season, Slippery Rock dropped its first home game of the year to Gannon University, 1-0, before going on to win 13 of its last 15 games at Kasnevich Field.

FRESHMEN LEADING THE WAY
Maddie Cavenaugh and Rachel Baker have led Slippery Rock at the plate and in the circle early this season. On the offensive end, Cavenaugh leads all Rock batters with 13 hits, 12 RBIs, 11 runs and two home runs.

In the circle, Baker set the tone for Slippery Rock with four wins in as many starts. The freshman has givien up only 13 hits and walked 17 batters in 23 innings pitched, while striking out 24 opponents with a 1.52 ERA.

OUT OF THE BULLPEN
Paige Gresgott earned SRU's first save of the season during THE Spring Games. Gresgott picked up the save during Slippery Rock's 9-4 win over Wheeling University. The senior got six quick outs against the Cardinals, giving up only one hit and striking out two batters. Gresgott's save was the second of her career.

STRIKEOUTS GALORE
Baker's 24 strikeouts on the season paces The Rock and slots her third in all the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in punchouts.

DUAL THREAT
Kayla Williams performed for The Rock at teh plate adn in the cirlce as the sophomore pitched 12 innings, struck out 11 batters, earned a win in the circle. At the plate, Williams saw 11 at-bats where she recorded four hits (.364 AVG), drove in one run and drew one walk.

DRIVING IN RUNS
Cavenaugh and Alyssa Sheely have driven in the most runs for The Rock over their first eight games. Cavenaugh's 1.5 RBIs per game put her 14th in the nation and second in the PSAC, while her 12 RBIs tops the conference.

While Sheely hasn't hit the minimums for game played to find herself in the any rankings, the senior has driven in eight runs in just four games played.

DOUBLE MACHINE
Alyssa Massucci was one of Slippery Rock's stronger hitters down in Winter Haven, Florida. Massucci hit .400 (8-for-20) with half of her hits as doubles. The sophomore's four doubles currently pace The Rock, while her 0.57 doubles per game is 19th in Division II.

DRAWING WALKS
In eight games this season, SRU already has three players that have drawn three or more walks. Paige Parker leads Slippery Rock with five bases taken on balls. Along with Parker's two hits, the junior has reached base on seven of her 18 plate appearances. Aubrey Mansfield (four walks) and Shaylyn Shall (three walks) also have drawn three or more walks so far this season.

TAKING EXTRA BASES
Slippery Rock has taken advantage of opportunities on the base-paths this season as SRU already has three players with multiple stolen bases. Cavenaugh (3-3) and Mansfield (2-2) have been perfect in their attempts this season, while Jessica Goldhardt (2-3) has also stolen multiple bases.
