SALEM, Va. – The Slippery Rock University softball team split two games at the Mountain East Conference/Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Crossover with a 2-1 loss to West Liberty University followed by a 10-0 win over Concord University Saturday at the Moyer Softball Complex.
After the two-game set, Slippery Rock is 6-6 overall, while West Liberty is 5-9 and Concord is 9-6.
Slippery Rock was led by
Maddie Cavenaugh, as the rookie was the only Rock player to grab hits in both games, going 2-for-7 on the day. In the circle,
Rachel Baker and
Paige Gresgott each threw a complete game for SRU.Â
In the first game of the day, the Hilltoppers scored the first runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning, after a walk and two hits.
Slippery Rock tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning when
Jessica Goldhardt singled with two outs and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Cavenaugh proceeded to drive in Goldhardt with an RBI-single, but The Rock's comeback attempt would fall short in the seventh inning.
Sydney Brown was the only Rock player to have multiple hits against West Liberty with a 2-for-2 performance with a walk. Cavenaugh and
Shaylyn Shall each went 1-for-4 with Cavenaugh earning one RBI. Goldhardt also picked up a hit with a 1-for-3 showing with a run scored.
Baker (4-1) pitched a complete game and gave up two runs (one earned) on eight hits and one walk, while punching out a career-high 12 batters in the loss.
Kadence Pettit (3-3) earned the win for the Hilltoppers after pitching seven innings, giving up one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out five batters.
SRU followed up its 2-1 loss to West Liberty with a strong offensive performance in a 10-0 win over Concord.
Slippery Rock opened the scoring in the second inning when
Alyssa Sheely drove in
Alyssa Massucci with an RBI-single. SRU would add another run in the fourth with Sheely knocking home
Aubrey Mansfield with another RBI-single.
The Rock then blew the game open in the seventh inning with and eight-run outburst, highlighted by Sheely's two-run single.
Sheely went a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs and one run as one of four Rock players with multiple hits against the Mountain Lions. Massucci added three hits in four at-bats along with one RBI and two runs. Mansfield and
Addie Deal each went 2-for-4 with Deal earning four RBIs and one run, while Mansfield added two runs.
Cavenaugh (1-for-3) and
Kayla Williams (1-for-3) notched the last two hits for SRU against Concord with Cavenaugh scoring one run. Williams and Cavenaugh also drew one walk each.
Gresgott (1-2) earned the win for Slippery Rock, pitching a complete-game shutout, surrendering just five hits and no walks, while striking out three batters.
Reghan Hintz (2-4) took the loss for Concord, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out five batters in 5.1 innings.
Slippery Rock is back in action tomorrow with another two-game set against Shippensburg University and Bowie State University at the Botetourt Sports Complex. First pitch against the Raiders is set for 10 a.m. followed by a matchup with the Bulldogs at 12 p.m.
