Rock upended at Seton Hill, 96-75

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team was downed in a PSAC West matchup, 96-75, at Seton Hill Saturday afternoon.

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team was downed in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Wester Division matchup, 96-75, at Seton Hill University Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Slippery Rock fell to 5-11 overall and 3-7 within PSAC competition, while Seton Hill improved its record to 13-3 overall and 8-1 inside PSAC play.

Iyanna Wade led Slippery Rock in scoring for the sixth time this season. Wade matched her career-high with 20 points. The freshman also facilitated out five assists, brought down three rebounds and collected three steals.

Kayley Joseph-Bernard and Sophia Hook each scored 13 points for The Rock. Hook grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists, while Joseph-Bernard brought down a career-high 18 rebounds, facilitated four assists, blocked one shot and came away with one steal.

Alyssa Gillin and Karianna Woods rounded out SRU's double-digit scorers with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Gillin grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. With the two rejections, Gillin moved into a tie for 13th place on SRU's all-time blocks list with 50. Woods picked up three rebounds, two assists and two steals. With her two steals, Woods moved up into ninth place on SRU's steals list by a transfer in their first season at The Rock.

The last time Slippery Rock had five different players score 10 or more points in a game was Nov. 27, 2021, in a 77-71 victory over Notre Dame College. Jamiyah Johnson, Isabella Middleton, Kennedy Middleton, Daeja Quick and Anyah Curd all scored 10 or more points for SRU against the Falcons

Mairan Haggerty rounded out The Rock's scorers with eight points against her former team. The junior forward also grabbed five rebounds, dished out one assist and picked up one steal.

Slippery Rock and Seton Hill traded baskets early, and The Rock took a 10-9 lead at the 5:04 mark of the first quarter. SRU extended its lead to 16-11 with 2:21 left to play in the first frame. The Griffins ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 20-16 advantage into the second quarter.

SHU separated itself in the second frame, taking a 49-37 lead into halftime. Slippery Rock was able to cut Seton Hill's lead to eight points on numerous occasions, including 51-43 at the 8:11 mark of the third quarter. After that point, the Griffins were able to comfortably pull ahead into a 96-75 victory.

Slippery Rock ended the game shooting 42.3 percent (30-of-71) from the field overall, 28 percent (7-for-25) from the 3-point line and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from the charity stripe.

Seton Hill shot to 52.2 percent (36-of-69) from the floor overall, 35 percent (7-for-20) from beyond the arc and 73.9 percent (17-of-23) from the foul line.

The Griffins had three players score 20 or more points led by the Cowan sister's, who combined for 50 of Seton Hill's 96 points. Hallie Cowan led all scorers with 27 points, followed by Helene Cowan with 23 points and Mia Kalich with 22 points. Kalich added 11 rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Hailee Ford rounded out SHU's double-digit scorers with 12 points.

Slippery Rock will return home to face-off with California (Pa.) 1 p.m. Jan. 24 at Morrow Field House.
