GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team lost on the road Saturday at Seton Hill University, 88-62.
Saturday's result moves The Rock's record to 13-5 overall and 6-4 inside the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The host Griffins improve to 13-5 overall and 7-3 in league competition.
Slippery Rock was led in the loss by the trio of
Kerwin Prince,
Isaac James and
Brady Mayo.
Prince posted a great all-around stat line of 17 points, eight rebounds and two steals. James added 10 points and seven rebounds as well with Mayo chipping in 13 points, three assists and two steals.
Prince shot an efficient 8-for-11 from the field while Mayo and James both connected on 4-of-8 field goal attempts as well. Two of May's buckets came from 3-point range.
Braylon Littlejohn had seven points.
RJ Sledge distributed four assists in addition to scoring five points.
Sheick Samoura and
Enire Bowens grabbed five rebounds apiece, with Samoura also blocking one shot and scoring four points.
Dame Givner matched Prince and Mayo for team-high honors in steals with two.
SRU shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the field overall, 20 percent (4-of-20) from 3-point range and 58.8 percent (10-of-17) at the foul line.
Seton Hill earned its win by hitting 48.5 percent (32-of-66) of its field goal attempts including a 10-for-26 effort from 3-point territory (.385). The Griffins also mad 14-of-16 foul shots (.875), held a +4 rebounding margin (39-35) and scored 17 points off 14 Rock turnovers.
In what was a back-and-forth first half, Slippery Rock took a slim 13-11 advantage into the under 12 media timeout only for the Griffins to rattle off a 16-6 run and in the process grab a 27-19 lead with 3:54 to play in the period.
Slippery Rock countered with an impressive spurt of its own, firing off eight consecutive points courtesy of 3-pointers by Littlejohn and Bowens as well as a basket by Prince to pull even with SHU at 27-27. However, Seton Hill scored five of the final seven points in the first half to take a 32-29 advantage into the break.
Prince led SRU in the opening 20 minutes with 11 points, four rebounds, two steals and a block.
A second-half comeback was not to be for The Rock. While a layup by Sledge to open the second half cut SRU's deficit to just one point, the remainder of the day belonged to Seton Hill which used a 16-0 run during the middle portion of the half to put the game out of reach en route to the eventual 26-point victory,.
Slippery Rock returns to Morrow Field House to host California (Pa.) 3 p.m. Jan. 24. The Vulcans swept SRU in the season series a year ago.
