FROSTBURG, Md. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost on the road Tuesday in non-conference competition at Frostburg State University, 2-1.

The loss moves The Rock's record to 3-3 in 2025 while Frostburg State improves to 1-6.

Lucy Hutchinson scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to lead SRU in the road bout. She finished with two total shots; one off Riley Cloude's team-high three attempts.

Roz Mikulak, Coral Piramo, Christina Clymer and Julia Boettler all logged shot attempts as well for The Rock.

Goalkeeper Emily Newton played all 60 minutes, making 11 saves with two goals allowed.

Following a scoreless opening quarter, Slippery Rock earned a penalty corner – it's third of the game – that resulted in the first goal of the day.

Serving as the inserter, Hutchinson put a pass to Clymer which started a series of movement that eventually led to a Cloude attempt. While Cloude's shot was off target it did afford Hutchinson the opportunity to rebound the miss and beat Zoe Barnes for the go-ahead goal in the 17th minute.

The Rock's lead held for the next 10 minutes until a Bobcat pass was played in from the far side of the field into the middle of SRU's zone. Layla Lagunas was able to receive the pass and send a shot by Newton, who nearly intercepted the connection before Lagunas' stick was able to deflect in the attempt for the game-tying goal at 26:28.

Newton made two saves and Slippery Rock successfully defended three Bobcat penalty corners after the FSU goal to send the game into halftime in a 1-1 deadlock.

While attempts by Hutchinson and Cloude were both defended by Frostburg State in the third quarter, Newton made four saves coming out of the halftime break to keep the game tied entering the fourth quarter.

Frostburg State controlled possession for the majority of the opening nine minutes of the fourth quarter, peppering SRU with four shots to start the final period with the first three being stopped by Newton before Paige Leitzel found an open cage on the fourth attempt to give Frostburg State a one-goal lead with six minutes remaining in regulation.

SRU had four legitimate scoring opportunities over the remainder of the game. However, a pass went just out of reach of an open Piramo in the middle of the FSU zone at 3:15, a shot by Boettler sailed wide with 90 seconds to play, Barnes stopped a Mikulak attempt with 43 seconds showing on the clock and the Bobcats defended a final Rock penalty corner as time expired to secure the win.

For the game, Frostburg State held advantages over The Rock in total shots (16-9), shots on goal (15-5) and penalty corners (8-6).

Slippery Rock returns home to host Millersville University 12 p.m. Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium for its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener.
