WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The 12th ranked and second seeded Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team scored an historic upset on the road at undefeated No. 1 seed West Chester University Saturday with a 16-13 win in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II Tournament from Vonnie Gros Field.

The Rock claim the first Atlantic Region title in program history and punch their ticket to the national semifinals next Thursday in Salem, Virginia. SRU earned the No. 2 seed out of the final four teams and will play against No. 3 seed Adelphi, the winners of the East Region, in the semifinals Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Kerr Stadium. The earlier semifinal game Thursday will be No. 1 seed Tampa against No. 4 seed Indianapolis. The winners of the two semifinal games Thursday will advance to Saturday's National Championship.

The win improves Slippery Rock to 18-2 overall and extends the program's single-season record for wins while avenging a 17-11 loss at West Chester two weeks ago in the PSAC title game. It also gives The Rock their first-ever win over West Chester after dropping the first 17 meetings between the two teams. The Golden Rams entered the quarterfinals as the only undefeated team in Division II and close the year with a 19-1 overall record.

Slippery Rock wasted little time in setting the tone Saturday when Leora Owings won the opening draw control and went straight to the net to score the opening goal just 14 seconds into the game.

West Chester tallied the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead before The Rock went on a 5-1 run to take a 6-3 lead late in a high scoring opening quarter.

The Golden Rams chipped away at the deficit and tied the game at 8-8 with 3:08 to play in the second, but Slippery Rock responded with a woman-down goal from Eryn Little with 16 seconds left in the half to take a 9-8 lead into the break.

The Rock extended the lead to three goals early in the third quarter before West Chester rallied back to cut the deficit to 12-11 with 13:27 to play in the fourth. That would be as close as the hosts would get as Slippery Rock answered with a 4-0 run with four different goal scorers to open up a 16-11 lead with 6:44 to play. West Chester tallied the final two goals, but could get no closer than the 16-13 final.

Slippery Rock improved in all facets of the game from the first meeting against West Chester two weeks ago, pouring in 16 goals against one of the top defenses in the country and limiting the second-highest scoring offense in the nation to 13 goals. The Rock finished the game with a 19-14 advantage in draw controls, while West Chester posted a 31-25 edge in total shots and a 22-14 advantage in ground balls.

Grace Rotter, who was held without a point in the first game against WCU, led the attack with six points on three goals and three assists. Isabella Buono added five points on two goals and three assists, while Leora Owings and Abby Fink each scored three goals and handed out one assist. Owings also grabbed eight draw controls and three ground balls.

Krysta Frankowski netted one goal and handed out one assist and Reagan Richeson, Eryn Little, Sydney Ulmer and Ella Koslowski each scored one goal as The Rock finished with nine different point scorers.

Lily Ventresca broke the SRU single-season record for wins by a goalie and improved to 16-0 this spring after recording seven saves.

West Chester got four goals and one assist from Kendall Fortune and four goals from Keri Barnett. Hannah Cornelius played the first 32:08 in goal and allowed 10 goals while making one save. Morgan Koons played the final 27:52 and allowed six goals with three saves.

Slippery Rock will now turn its focus to the national semifinals next Thursday against Adelphi in Salem, Virginia. More information about the game will be announced Monday, including ticketing information, live coverage and more.
