No. 13 Rock wins eighth straight, 15-7 at IUP

No. 13 Slippery Rock tied the program record for longest winning streak with an eighth straight victory after picking up a 15-7 win on the road at IUP Friday night.

INDIANA, Pa. – The 13th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team tied a program record for the longest winning streak in SRU history with a 15-7 win on the road at Indiana University (Pa.) Friday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game from Miller Stadium.

The Rock picked up their eighth straight victory to improve to 13-1 overall and 8-0 in PSAC West games, tying the 1983 team for the longest winning streak in program history. Indiana (Pa.) dropped to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in the PSAC West with the loss, which was its ninth loss of the season to a regionally ranked opponent.

The Crimson Hawks opened the scoring Friday night just 1:19 into the game with a goal from Brenna Whiteside, but Slippery Rock quickly answered just 1:41 later with Reagan Richeson scoring her first of the game to tie it at 1-1. SRU would put together a 4-0 run to jump out to a 4-1 lead and would never trail the rest of the way.

Slippery Rock built an 8-4 advantage at halftime and then strung together six straight goals in the second half to pull away for a comfortable win.

The Rock finished the game with advantages of 36-14 in total shots, 15-10 in draw controls, 22-20 in ground balls and 15-8 in caused turnovers.

Richeson closed her night with game-highs of four goals and five points after she also handed out one assist. Grace Rotter matched her for game-high honors with five points on three goals and two assists. Isabella Buono chipped in two goals and two assists, Abby Fink scored two goals and handed out one assist and Eryn Little tallied two goals to give SRU five players with multiple points in the game.

Leora Owings and Ella Koslowski rounded out the point scorers with one goal each. Owings also pulled down a game-high seven draw controls.

Nicole Masi continued to shine on defense with four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Mckenzie Murphy added two caused turnovers, Amelia Nitsche picked up three ground balls and Paige Jenkins grabbed five draw controls to round out a defensive effort that limited IUP to just seven goals and 14 total shots.

Lily Ventresca improved to 12-0 in goal after recording three saves and allowing seven goals in 54:11 of action. Ava Drath played the final 5:49 and made one save while allowing no goals.

IUP was paced by Emme Mass with three goals and Kathryn Burke with one goal and two assists. Mia Courtalis took the loss in goal after allowing 10 goals and recording six saves in 41:31 between the posts. Maddy Schramm played 18:29 and allowed five goals with two saves.

Slippery Rock will now shift its focus to the most important game remaining in the regular season with No. 18 Seton Hill set to visit Mihalik-Thompson Stadium Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match. A win in that game would lock up the regular season PSAC West title, a No. 1 seed in the upcoming PSAC Tournament and a bye to advance directly to the tournament semifinals.
