Rock rolls to 7-0 win vs. West Virginia Wesleyan

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team earned a 7-0 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan Friday. The Rock have now won 17 straight matches played at the SRU Tennis Courts.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned a 7-0 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan College Friday at the SRU Tennis Courts.
 
The home victory improves Slippery Rock's record to 4-6 overall, while the Bobcats fall to 1-9 in 2024-25. Friday's match was the first of the season for The Rock at the SRU Tennis Courts. Slippery Rock has now won 17 consecutive matches played at its home outdoor courts.
 
SRU earned its second shutout of the season by grabbing all three doubles decisions followed by sweeping the singles rotation.
 
Tina Slovak and Amaia Balaguer Brau opened the match with a 6-0 shutout of Gabby Dooling and Hailey Banda from the second flight before Georgie Lancaster and Dari Sakhanova clinched the first team point of the day by way of a 6-2 win against Angelique Jansen van Vuuren and Andrea Martinez Garrido out of the third flight.
 
In the closest bout of the afternoon, The Rock's top doubles team of Alissia Kivi and Nicole Kempton sent SRU into the singles portion of the match with all the momentum after earning a 7-5 win over Emilie Bergmann and Dominique Jansen van Vuuren.
 
Kempton and Kivi are now 17-4 as a team this year while Balaguer Brau and Slovak improve to a near perfect 8-2 as a pairing.
 
Sakhanova jump started The Rock's singles efforts with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Bergmann for her 11th win of the year. Kivi, SRU's freshman standout, gave Slippery Rock a 3-0 lead and improved to 12-6 as a rookie in the process by besting A. Jansen van Vuuren 6-2, 6-2 in second flight competition.
 
The match-clinching point came out of the third flight where Kempton defeated Dooling 6-2, 6-1. Kempton has won five of her last seven matches and is now 10-7 overall.
 
Balaguer Brau, the 36th-ranked singles athlete in the nation, then beat D. Jansen van Vuuren 6-4, 6-2 in first flight play to earn her team-leading 14th singles win in 2024-25.
 
The day ended with respective wins from Slovak over Banda (6-2, 6-0) and Lancaster against Emma Rusiecki (6-2, 6-0) from the fourth and sixth flights.
 
Slippery Rock closes its weekend with another Atlantic Region match 1 p.m. Sunday at Fairmont State University .
