Rock thwarted by Bryant, 5-2

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team lost to Bryant, 5-2, Tuesday night at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost to Bryant University, 5-2, Tuesday night at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

Tuesday's result snaps a two-match winning streak for Slippery Rock and drops its record to 3-4 on the year. Three of SRU's four losses have come against Division I competition in Bryant, Youngstown State and Bucknell. With the win, Bryant improves to 6-4 in 2025.

As has been the case for much of the season, Slippery Rock took two of the three doubles flights to earn the first point of the day.

The Rock and Bulldogs started the night by splitting results in doubles play. Nicole Kempton and Alissia Kivi bested Caitlyn Munson and Natalia Vela in the first flight, 6-4, only for Bryant to counter with a 6-2 win in the third flight by Yahli Noy and Lucia Pino over Georgie Lancaster and Dari Sakhanova.

Not to be out done, the undefeated pairing of Tina Slovak and Amaia Balaguer Brau delivered when it mattered most for The Rock by way of a 7-5 victory against Maria Jose Hernandez Diaz and Lisa Marie Dugec out of the second flight.

Balaguer Brau and Slovak exit the match with a 7-0 record on the year while Kempton and Kivi improve to 15-3.

Kempton proceeded to open the singles portion of Tuesday's match on a high note for The Rock thanks to a 6-2, 6-2 third flight victory against Munson. The win was Kempton's fourth in as many matches as she improved her overall record to 9-5.

However, the following five bouts belonged to Bryant starting with a 6-3, 6-4 Bulldog win in the top flight by Vela against 21st-ranked Balaguer Brau followed by a 6-4, 6-4 fourth flight win from Hernandez Diaz against Slovak to even the team score at 2-2.

Bryant added its third point of match in the sixth flight where Dugec beat Lancaster 6-2, 6-3 before a tight 7-6, 7-6 win by Noy versus Kivi in the second flight clinched the team victory for the Bulldogs.

The night ended with a 7-6, 6-2 Aurora Pedwell win against Sakhanova in the fifth flight.

Slippery Rock continues its Florida trip 4 p.m. Wednesday at No. 34 Saint Leo University.
