Rock goes toe-to-toe with Clarion in Senior Day loss

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team trailed by as few as four points with 13 minutes remaining but dropped a 76-58 loss to Clarion in its final home game of the season Wednesday at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team trailed by as few as four points with 13 minutes remaining but dropped a 76-58 loss to Clarion in its final home game of the season Wednesday at Morrow Field House.
 
Prior to tipoff, Brooklyn Jones, Hallie Raabe, Endya Robinson and Tahmala Thorpe were honored as part of the team's annual Senior Day festivities.
 
The Rock fall to 7-17 on the season and 4-14 inside the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with the result. The Golden Eagles snapped a three-game losing streak and moved to 14-13 overall and 8-11 in league play. Clarion also snagged the sixth and final PSAC West seed in the PSAC Tournament, in turn eliminating SRU from playoff contention.
 
Mairan Haggerty led The Rock offensively with 12 points on 50 percent shooting (5-of-10), also bringing down five rebounds and a block. Alyssa Gillin posted a well-rounded night of nine points, six rebounds and one block, while Robinson guided the team with seven rebounds. Robinson additionally recorded six points, three assists and two steals.
 
Jones (5 points, 1 block), Raabe (2 points), Sophia Hook (6 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals), Kayley Joseph-Bernard (6 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block), Hannah Pugliese (5 points), Deryn Moye (3 points), Anye Washington (2 points, 4 assists) and Rebecca Goetz (2 points) rounded out SRU's 11 unique scorers.
 
The full team effort marks the second consecutive game in which all players that touched the court scored for Slippery Rock.
 
SRU responded to an early deficit with an 8-1 run that turned into an 8-6 Rock lead. Clarion sprung out to a 14-8 lead on an 8-0 run of its own, entering the bonus at the 5:10 mark. The sides traded possessions in the final few minutes of the first quarter with the Golden Eagles earning an 18-12 edge.
 
The two teams drew dead even through the bulk of the second quarter, a period in which both Clarion and SRU shot north of 53 percent. The Golden Eagles extended their lead by two, outscoring The Rock 19-17 to carry a 37-29 advantage into the locker room. Nine different SRU players had scored by the half with Haggerty adding a team-high eight.
 
Slippery Rock held Clarion off the board for the first 4:19 of the second half, cutting into the deficit by four points in the meantime. SRU cut Clarion's lead to four with 3:12 left in the third but fell further behind by the end of the quarter after the Golden Eagles finished on a 9-1 run to lead 51-39.
 
Clarion cashed in on 6-of-7 attempts from 3-point range in the fourth quarter (.857) to pull away, shooting 64.3 percent overall in the final 10 minutes (9-of-14). The Rock shot 50 percent themselves in the fourth (7-of-14) but could not make up the difference in the 18-point loss.
 
Slippery Rock concluded the game shooting 41.8 percent (23-of-55), its best clip in 10 games. The Rock made 2-of-7 from the 3-point arc (.286) and 10-of-19 free throws (.526). SRU won the turnover battle for a second consecutive game for the first time this season, 16-15.
 
The Golden Eagles shot 48.3 percent (29-of-60), their fourth-best rate of the year. They had their best 3-point shooting night of the season as well, converting 10-of-21 (.476). Clarion shot 57.1 percent from the foul line (8-of-14). Autumn Taylor led the team with 23 points, while Madison Palek came away with eight points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
 
SRU will play its final two games of the season on the road, first traveling to Indiana University (Pa.) 1 p.m. Saturday.
