Rock slides into first in the PSAC West with 3-0 win at UPJ

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team moved into first place in the PSAC West, and extended its win streak to six games, with 3-0 win at Pitt-Johnstown.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa.  – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team moved into first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division, and extended its win streak to six games, with 3-0 win at Pitt-Johnstown.
 
With the win, Slippery Rock improved its record to 10-3-0 overall and 10-1-0 in the PSAC West, while Pitt-Johnstown saw its record drop to 2-7-4 overall and 2-7-2 in the PSAC West.

Saturday's road victory was crucial for Slippery Rock as Indiana University (Pa.) took down No. 7 Gannon University, 1-0, giving The Rock first place in the PSAC West standings with a two-point advantage over the Golden Knights (30-28) with three games to play in the regular season.
 
Additionally, the win will keep SRU on track for a strong place in the regional rankings. The NCAA will release its first batch of regional rankings next week.
 
The NCAA's regional rankings are the only official ranking used by the Division II Women's Soccer Committee's to determine which teams from each of the eight regions will qualify for the 56-team NCAA Division II playoffs. The regional rankings will be released every Wednesday through the final three weeks of the season until final selections are revealed Nov. 17.
 
Slippery Rock has now won six consecutive games, marking the program's second longest winning streak over the last five years.
 
Marissa Salisbury, Abby Paterline and Libby Earley scored one goal each for The Rock. Salisbury's goal was her team-leading seventh goal this season, while Paterline's marker was her fifth of the year and Earley's tally was her first of the campaign.
 
Lilia Battalini grabbed her first two assists of the season in the win.
 
Salisbury and Bailey McGee led Slippery Rock in shots with three apiece. Paterline, Libby Zacharyasz and Sophia Palermo all took two shots, while Battalini, Earley and Irene Doleno rounded out the shot takers for SRU.
 
Leah Allman made three saves and earned the win in goal, while Allie Burkholder made her first career appearance and made one save in the victory.
 
Slippery Rock opened the scoring in the 26th minute with Paterline putting one home off a Battalini assist, giving Slippery Rock a 1-0 lead.
 
The Rock doubled their lead before halftime when Salisbury buried a shot off a pass from Battalini in the 31st minute, giving Slippery Rock a 2-0 lead.
 
Slippery Rock took a 12-2 advantage in shots and 5-2 in shots on goal into the halftime break.
 
Earley added an insurance marker in the 50th minute, giving Slippery Rock a 3-0 lead.
 
SRU ended the game with a 15-13 tilt in shots and 8-4 in shots on goal. The combined shutout was the seventh clean sheet in Slippery Rock's last 10 games.
 
Slippery Rock will travel to Clarion to attempt the season-sweep over the Golden Eagles 7 p.m. Oct. 29. Earlier this season, The Rock claimed a 2-1 victory over Clarion at James Egli Field.
