Rock loses to Roberts Wesleyan, 4-0

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer was shut down by Roberts Wesleyan in a 4-0 decision at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium Wednesday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team was shut down by Roberts Wesleyan University in a 4-0 decision at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium Wednesday.

The Rock saw their overall record downgrade to 2-2-1 on the year, while the Redhawks improved to 2-3-1 with a 0-1 mark in East Coast Conference play.

Slippery Rock totaled four shots in the match, stemming from four different players: Aaron Finney, Luke Gildea, Aitor Jorde and Ignacio Rullan.

While the box score won't illuminate some of the impressive saves Adam Davies made, the senior keeper wound up recording a career-high seven stops on 15 shots faced.

SRU allowed two goals in each half, with RWU's first strike coming just 5:24 into action. An unlucky deflection off a Slippery Rock throw-in landed at the feet of Myles Palmer, who saw a 30-yard breakaway that finished with a goal in front of him.

Jorde fired Slippery Rock's second and final shot of the first half in the 17th minute, a strong-footed attempt on a rebound that missed high.

Roberts Wesleyan doubled its lead on a nifty through-ball find by Luke Hanes, lending his pass to Tamas Nagy in the 33rd minute. RWU could not convert on its final three shots of the first frame, still enjoying a 2-0 cushion at halftime.

The Redhawks did not spend much time waiting to increase their lead, scoring again with Palmer in the 60th minute. The sophomore was able to celebrate a hat trick 4:35 later, scoring again to give Roberts Wesleyan a 4-0 lead that would not be touched.

SRU's chances were few and far between for the remainder of the contest, seeing three more corner kicks and a final look from Finney with 2:26 remaining.

Roberts Wesleyan's 4-0 win was reflected statistically with leads in shots (15-4) and shots on goal (11-0). The Rock did come out of the 90-minute affair with a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Palmer put all five of his shots on target for RWU, a game-high. Eric Jewson recorded the shutout in his first collegiate start despite not needing to make a single save.

Slippery Rock will get a week of play off before hosting Gannon University 1 p.m. Oct. 2 at James Egli Field in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opener.
