Rock downs Mercyhurst, sets program wins record

Slippery Rock broke the single-season record for wins and improved to 14-3 with a 22-16 win at Mercyhurst Friday.

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team broke the program's single-season record for wins with a 22-16 victory on the road at Mercyhurst University in the regular season finale Friday from Saxon Field.

The win improves The Rock to 14-3 overall and 10-2 in PSAC West games, breaking the former program record of 13 wins that was set in 2018. Mercyhurst, which played its final game as a Division II school, finishes its season with a 4-12 overall record. Slippery Rock has locked up the No. 2 seed in the PSAC Playoffs and will host No. 3 seed Lock Haven Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the PSAC quarterfinals.

The Rock also set a foursome of individual records in Saturday's game. Gillian O'Rourke set the single-season record for wins by a goalie (14), topping Emily Bitka's former record of 13 from 2018. She also broke Bitka's career record for ground balls (167). Camryn Whipple had a trio of assists to bring her season total to 40, setting the new single-season record after breaking a tie with Emily Benham (2022). Charleigh Rondeau pulled down 21 draw controls to shatter her own single-game record of 18 and she extended her career record to 529 draw controls.

Rondeau's dominance in the draw circle led to a 29-13 advantage in draw controls, which SRU turned into a 42-23 edge in total shots.

Lauren Searles paced the attack with eight points on five goals and three assists. Reagan Richeson added five goals and one assist for six points. Rondeau scored a hat trick and handed out one assist, Erin Melcher scored a hat trick and Whipple added one goal to her three assists to give SRU five players with at least three points.

Brooke Wisniewski chipped in two goals, Rachel Mahoney had one goal and one assist and Krysta Frankowski and Sydney Ulmer each scored one goal to cap the point scorers.

O'Rourke made four saves in the win.

Mercyhurst got four goals and five assists from Whitley Easton and four goals from Hannah Young. Paige Maneri and AJ Jameson each made five saves while playing one half in goal.

Slippery Rock will now shift its focus to its first-ever home PSAC Playoff game Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Lock Haven.
