SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 with a 12-2 win over Frostburg State University in a rainy non-conference game Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Â
The Rock scored the first five goals of the game and never looked back on the way to picking up a second win this week and improving to 3-0 overall to open the season. Frostburg State was limited to its lowest output of the season and dropped to 3-2 overall with its only other loss coming by an 11-4 score against No. 5 Grand Valley State.
Â
SRU goalie
Gillian O'Rourke made five saves in the game, all coming at key moments that stalled momentum and limited the Bobcats chances to get back into the game. With the victory, she moved past Emily Bitka for the program's all-time record for wins by a goalie with her 26th career victory. O'Rourke also tallied five ground balls on the day.
Â
The Rock defense was stellar Saturday, limiting the Bobcats to just 12-of-23 on clear attempts and coming up with 13 caused turnovers.
Isabella Buono led that category with four takeaways, while
Nicole Masi and
Hailey Ohlsen each had two caused turnovers. Â
Â
SRU finished the game with advantages of 25-12 in total shots, 10-7 in draw controls and 24-16 in ground balls. The Rock were also nearly perfect in transition, going 17-of-18 on clear attempts.
Â
Brooke Wisniewski led the attack with four goals with
Charleigh Rondeau and
Camryn Whipple both matching her point total with one goal and three assists each.
Ella Koslowski scored two goals and
Krysta Frankowski added one goal and one assist to cap the players with multiple points.
Â
Buono,
Lauren Searles and
Sydney Ulmer each scored one goal and
Rachel Mahoney and
Ava Dossier each handed out one assist to round out the point scorers.
Â
Frostburg State got one goal each from Neila Haney and Camden DeMaio. Nicole Gray made 11 saves in goal.
Â
Slippery Rock will now shift its focus to a spring break trip to the Carolinas. The Rock are scheduled to fly out of Pittsburgh Sunday for the week and will play games at the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina Wednesday and at Lander University in South Carolina Saturday.
Â
SRU will open conference play after spring break when PSAC West preseason favorite Seton Hill visits March 23 for a noon game.
