ROME, Ga. - Slippery Rock University women's tennis standout
Amaia Balaguer Brau concluded her time at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Cup in a consolation match Saturday at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia.
Balaguer Brau met Jessica Binzari of Midwestern State University, who ended last year ranked as the No. 21 athlete in Division II. Binzari was able to defeat Balaguer Brau 6-4, 6-1.
Saturday's match capped of a week of competition against the best athletes in the nation for Balaguer Brau who advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket with a victory over Academy of Art's Amelija Supulniece before a loss to Ashleigh Simes of Lee University pushed the Benicarlo, Spain native into the consolation bracket.
Both Supulniece and Simes were ranked in the ITA's final 2024 rankings.
The three matches at this week's national event move Balaguer Brau's record to 9-3 on the year.
Formerly known as the Small College Nationals, the ITA Cup has history dating back to 1986, and it is the only singles and doubles national championship event for the Division II and NAIA levels.
The ITA Cup features the champions from 60 regional ITA Championships and select at-large qualifiers from Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA. Balaguer Brau earned her spot at the ITA Cup after winning the ITA Atlantic Region title earlier in the season.
Balaguer Brau's appearance at the ITA Cup marked the official end of the fall season for Slippery Rock women's tennis. SRU returns to competition with the team portion of its 2024-25 season in the spring.
