ROME, Ga. – Slippery Rock University women's tennis standout
Amaia Balaguer Brau's championship run at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Cup came to an end Friday in the quarterfinal round.
Balaguer Brau, who defeated the tournament's second seed in the Round of 16 to reach Friday's quarterfinal bout, fell to Ashleigh Simes of Lee University in a solid three-set match. Balaguer Brau earned a 6-3 win in the opener before SImes rallied for 6-1 and 6-3 victories to earn a spot in the ITA Cup semifinals.
Despite the loss, Balaguer Brau will still compete once more at the ITA Cup in a consolation match to be held Saturday against an opponent yet to be determined at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia.
Formerly known as the Small College Nationals, the ITA Cup has history dating back to 1986, and it is the only singles and doubles national championship event for the Division II and NAIA levels.
The ITA Cup features the champions from 60 regional ITA Championships and select at-large qualifiers from Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA. Balaguer Brau earned her spot at the ITA Cup after winning the ITA Atlantic Region title earlier in the season.
After splitting her first two matches at the ITA Cup, Balaguer Brau's overall record this season moves to a healthy 9-2.
