The Slippery Rock field hockey team lost to Frostburg State, 1-0, in overtime Friday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost to Frostburg State University, 1-0, in overtime Friday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The non-conference defeat drops The Rock's record to 1-2 in 2023 while the visiting Bobcats improve to 3-0. Friday's game was the second contest of the season that went to overtime for SRU, which also defeated Maryville University in a shootout on Sept. 2.

While Frostburg State controlled possession for much of the game, Slippery Rock's defense was able to with withstand the Bobcat attack for the majority of the night by clearing 11 FSU penalty corners and defending the first 14 FSU shots it faced.

However, with just 1:58 remaining in the opening overtime period, Frostburg State finally broke through The Rock's solid defense as Ashlyn Cave navigated around two defenders and fired off a shot from 11 yards out that narrowly snuck by goalkeeper Grace Burker to give the Bobcats a 1-0 win.

Burker was great for The Rock throughout the evening, finishing with six saves over 68:02 of playing time.

Playing in the first home game of her collegiate career, Hilary Hoffman paced the Slippery Rock offense with three shots on goal. Erin Roland and Kayla Del Vecchio had one shot on goal apiece as well.

SRU's best chances for a goal both came in the first minute of overtime, but strong attempts off the sticks of Del Vecchio and Hoffman were ultimately stopped Frostburg's Zoe Barnes.

Slippery Rock also earned back-to-back penalty corners three minutes into the overtime period and was once again able to record on-target attempts only for Barnes to come up with two more saves on shots by Hoffman and Roland to maintain the shutout before Cave's eventual game-winner.

Frostburg State closed the game with advantages over Slippery Rock in total shots (15-6), shots on goal (7-5) and corners (11-7).

SRU will finish out the weekend with another home game 12 p.m. Sunday against Converse University at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
