Rock and Roberts Wesleyan finish in 1-1 draw

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team picked up a 1-1 tie on the road in non-conference competition Saturday at Roberts Wesleyan.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team picked up a 1-1 tie on the road in non-conference competition Saturday at Roberts Wesleyan University.

The tie extends Slippery Rock's unbeaten streak to three games and moves its record on the season to 1-2-3 overall while the Redhawks close the weekend at 2-3-3.

Aashi Pandher scored his second goal in as many games to lead The Rock's efforts Saturday and in doing so joined Arturo Pla Hernandis and Aitor Jorde as one of three multi-goal scorers so far in 2023 for SRU.

Max Murphy set up Pandher's goal for what was his first collegiate assist.

Pandher and Pla Hernandis registered three shots each while Jorde and Luke Gildea both produced two attempts with Jeroen Van Der Veen and Ignacio Rullan rounding out SRU's offensive contributors with one attempt apiece.

Goalkeeper Adam Davies played all 90 minutes, making one save.

It took until the 63rd minute for the scoreless tie to be broke Saturday as Slippery Rock drew first blood courtesy of Pandher's strike.

Gildea started the scoring run when he put a well-placed pass from the midfield into Murphy, who then beat a Redhawk defender into the Roberts Wesleyan zone before sending a pass of his own across the box to an unmarked Pandher who easily chipped in a shot to give The Rock a 1-0 lead at 62:17.

Slippery Rock's defense held strong for the next 27 minutes, but just as it appeared SRU had locked up the road victory Tomas Nagy played a free kick from just inside midfield to the middle of The Rock's zone, finding Nathan Ferguson who was able to slip a shot past Davies for the game-tying goal with just 43 seconds left in regulation.

Neither team recorded a shot following the late goal en route to the tie.

For the game, Roberts Wesleyan led The Rock in total shots (14-12) while SRU held the edge in corner kicks (5-3). Both teams had one shot on goal.

With the bulk of its non-conference schedule completed, Slippery Rock now turns its attention to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition starting with a 6 p.m. Sept. 27 game at California (Pa.).
