ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team picked up its fourth doubleheader sweep of the week with a 4-2 game one win and 2-1 game two victory over Edinboro on the road Saturday.
Â
The Rock extend their winning streak to eight games following the pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division wins over the Fighting Scots, which is the first 8-game streak for SRU since the 2005 season and ranks tied for third longest winning streak in program history.
Â
Slippery Rock's overall record improves to 20-14 overall and 11-5 in the conference while Edinboro moves to 9-17 on the year and 3-11 in divisional competition.
Â
SRU was led over the doubleheader by
Arielle Brown, who went 3-for-7 with two runs, two RBI and a pair of doubles.
Anna Villies was 2-for-6 with one run scored and one RBI and
Cami Fisk rounded out The Rock's leaders over two games going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Â
Rock starting pitchers
Kelsi Anderson (12-3) and
Alexsa Hurd (7-2) each earned their fourth wins of the week while combining to strike out 16 batters.
Â
GAME ONE: SRU 4 – BORO 2
Slippery Rock and Edinboro entered the third inning tied with one run apiece but The Rock were able to outscore the Fighting Scots by one in the fourth frame on the way to a 4-2 SRU victory.
Â
Brown led off the opening inning with a single up the middle before advancing to second two batters later on a wild pitch. Fisk drove in The Rock's first run on an RBI-single to put SRU up 1-0 entering the home half of the first.
Â
Edinboro returned the favor in fine fashion by belting a solo home run in the first to knot the score 1-1.
Â
Anderson and Dylan Claycomb (0-3) each pitched a pair of shutout innings that maintained the tie heading into the fourth frame.
Â
With two outs on the board,
Julianna Hutchinson hit a single to the left side before advancing all the way to third base courtesy of two wild pitches.
Regan Hozak then reached scoring position herself after a walk and stolen base.
Â
Hutchinson and Hozak were both brought home in the next two at-bats with a Villies RBI-single and Brown run-scoring double to center field that gave SRU a 3-1 advantage at the top of the fourth.
Â
Edinboro cut the Slippery Rock lead to just one run on a sacrifice in the bottom of the fourth frame to stay within striking distance of a comeback victory.
Â
However, The Rock tacked on a seventh inning insurance run via
Mackenzie Freeman RBI-single before Anderson tallied the game's final three outs after facing only four batters in the seventh on the way to a 4-2 victory.
Â
Anderson took the win after allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits in a complete-game effort that saw nine strikeouts.
Â
Brown paced the Slippery Rock offense through game one as she went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Freeman, Fisk and Villies all ended the contest with one hit and one RBI.
Â
Claycomb was the pitcher of record for Edinboro after surrendering three runs on six hits with three strikeouts over four innings of work. The Fighting Scots were led from the batter's box by Mackenzie Quider, who was 2-for-2 with a solo home run.
Â
GAME TWO: SRU 2 – BORO 1
Edinboro scored first taking an early one-run lead over Slippery Rock through four innings before The Rock scored two runs to take a fifth-inning lead they would never relinquish en route to a 2-1 victory.
Â
After a scoreless first inning by both teams, the Fighting Scots got on the board first with a solo home run in the second frame to take an early 1-0 advantage.
Â
After Edinboro starting pitcher Lauren Bush (2-8) kept the Slippery Rock bats quiet for four innings,
Aubrey Mansfield broke the silence in the fifth by belting her first collegiate home run with two outs to knot the score 1-1.
Â
Two batters later, Brown extended the two out rally by driving in a runner on a double down the left field line to lift SRU over Edinboro, 2-1.
Â
The one run advantage proved enough for Hurd as she went on to face only eight batters throughout the final two innings, allowing no additional runs to secure a 2-1 Rock win in game two.
Â
Mansfield led the SRU offense going 1-for-1 with a solo home run while Brown tallied one RBI and Villies scored one run. Gardner was The Rock's only multi-hit batter in game two as she went 2-for-3.
Â
Hurd took the win after allowing just one run on six hits over seven innings of work with seven strikeouts.
Â
Bush was the pitcher of record as she surrendered two runs, one being earned, on six hits while striking out five in a complete-game effort. The Fighting Scots were led offensively by Morgan Spitler, who was 1-for-2 with a solo home run.
Â
Slippery Rock starts the second half of its round-robin conference schedule when it hosts Indiana University (Pa.) for a PSAC West doubleheader April 11 at Kasnevich Field with a 2 p.m. first pitch. Earlier this season, SRU swept the Crimson Hawks, 7-3, 8-0 on the road.
