SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University baseball team earned a 17-4 non-conference victory Saturday against Wilmington University on snowy and windy day at Jack Critchfield Park.
Â
Slippery Rock exits the weekend with a 9-4 overall record while Wilmington returns to Delaware at 7-9. Saturday's win, combined with Friday's split doubleheader, gives The Rock three consecutive series victories and eight wins in their last 10 games overall.
Â
SRU produced its eighth double-digit hit outing of the season as nine of the 13 Rock athletes who recorded an at-bat Saturday earned at least one hit. Of the 15 hits, nine went for extra bases in the form of seven doubles, one triple and one home run.
Â
Cam Panyko Morris had the best game of his career to pace The Rock's high-powered offense. Morris went 2-for-3 with four runs, one home run, five RBI and a pair of walks. His first collegiate home run was an impressive one as the sophomore launched a grand slam in the fifth inning.
Â
Koby Bubash went 3-for-5 with two runs, one RBI and a walk while the trio of
Jon Kozarian,
Noah Ross and
Robby Barrientos all collected two-hit games as well with Ross scoring three runs and Barrientos registering a pair of RBI on a double and a triple – his second in as many games.
Â
Joey Purcell and
Alex Robenolt both produced one-hit, two-RBI contests as well.
Colin Cain and
Joseph Ehland rounded out The Rock's top hitters Saturday by way of matching one-double, one-RBI showings.
Â
On the mound,
Luke Trueman,
Parker Hogge and
Mark Wilbur combined to hold Wilmington to four runs over the nine-inning contest.
Â
Trueman improved to 3-1 on the year after giving up just two runs and striking out nine batters over seven innings. Trueman has now struck out nine batters in back-to-back starts.
Â
Hogge came on for Trueman in the eighth and allowed one run on one hit before giving way to Wilbur, struck out two batters in the ninth and surrendered an unearned run to finish out Slippery Rock's 13-run victory.
Â
The Rock opened the scoring in second inning with three runs before the Wildcats cut into their deficit by scoring twice in the third. However, SRU went on to put the game out of the reach with 14 consecutive runs over the following five innings to take a 15-run advantage into the eighth.
Â
While Wilmington was able to tally runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, it never truly threatened The Rock's lead as SRU cruised to its third double-digit victory of the season.
Â
Rich Albrecht (0-4) took the loss for Wilmington after allowing five runs on five hits and a walk in three innings pitched. The Wildcats used five relivers over the remainder of the game. Tristan Schoendienst led WU at the plate by going 3-for-4 with one run scored.
Â
SRU is now 44-15 (.745) over the last two years in games played at Jack Critchfield Park.
Â
Slippery Rock opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition with a four-game series against Mercyhurst University March 24-25. SRU will first host the Lakers for a doubleheader March 24 at Jack Critchfield Park before traveling to Erie for two games March 25.
