Rock falls at No. 13 West Chester

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team suffered an 83-51 loss on the road to nationally ranked West Chester in its first PSAC matchup of the season.

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team suffered an 83-51 loss on the road to nationally ranked West Chester University in its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup of the season.
 
The loss puts The Rock's overall record at 0-3, starting PSAC competition at 0-1. The No. 13 Golden Rams improve to 5-1 in total, beginning conference play at 1-0.
 
Kristina Donza led Slippery Rock's offense by tying a career-high 17 points with a personal best four 3-pointers made.
 
Not only did Anye Washington record her first five minutes in a Slippery Rock uniform, but the Philadelphia native came off the bench to tally 10 points in the fourth quarter. 
 
Endya Robinson reeled in a career-best 11 rebounds, scoring seven points on the day. Deryn Moye led SRU in both steals and assists, with three each.
 
The Rock found themselves up against a West Chester offense that shot at a 66.7 clip in the first quarter, draining 10-of-15 shots and creating a 29-13 lead after 10 minutes. Robinson was strong underneath the hoop, pulling in five of her seven rebounds in the frame. 
 
Slippery Rock's defense stepped up in the second quarter, holding West Chester to a game-low 14 points. The Rock went into the intermission trailing 43-22, led by Kaylin Venick who scored all seven of her points in the first half. Venick additionally logged a career-high six rebounds.
 
Outscored 22-10 in the third quarter, SRU was able to turn things around in the fourth with 19 points over the Golden Rams' 18. Washington, in her return home to southeastern Pennsylvania, propelled The Rock to an 11-2 run that featured seven fast break points. Washington went 4-of-5 from the court and netted 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
 
The Golden Rams were led by Jayde Boyd's 20 points in the winning effort, Leah Johnson and Anna McTamney in double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Slippery Rock wrapped up the day with a field goal percentage of 29.8 (17-of-57), compared to West Chester's 47.7 percent (31-of-65). West Chester held an edge in 3-point shooting, going 7-of-30 (30.4 percent) while SRU converted 8-of-31 (25.8 percent) from distance.
 
The Golden Rams also held the upper hand from the free throw line, taking advantage in 14-of-17 (82.4 percent) of their opportunities as The Rock went 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from the charity stripe. Slippery Rock was outrebounded, 50-30, in the contest.
 
Slippery Rock returns to action 1 p.m. Saturday as it stays in PSAC East territory by traveling to Millersville University. The Rock most recently fell in overtime to the Marauders two seasons ago on the road, 76-66.
