Rock beats Belmont Abbey in overtime, 3-2

Samantha Karmonick scored a goal in the 62nd minute to lift the Slippery Rock field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime victory against Belmont Abbey Monday.

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Samantha Karmonick scored a goal in the 62nd minute to lift the Slippery Rock University field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime victory against Belmont Abbey College Monday morning in Gaffney, S.C. on the campus of Limestone University.

The win moves The Rock's record to 1-1 on the season while Belmont Abbey falls to 1-2. Monday's game marked the first overtime win for Slippery Rock since a 1-0 victory over Mercyhurst on Oct. 17, 2017.

Karmonick recorded all three of her shots for the game in overtime. Her first two attempts were stopped by Belmont Abbey goalie Chloe Parker, but Karmonick was able rebound her second shot and score the game-winning goal on her third attempt at 61:43.

The game-winning goal, the first such of her collegiate career, capped off a productive opening two games for Karmonick as she also assisted on a score in The Rock's season-opener against Pace University. All told, she leaves South Carolina with a team-high three points and four shots on goal.

Aiding The Rock's attack Monday were Gianna Conti and Leslie Colliver with one goal apiece. Bailee Christman and Kayla Del Vecchio registered one assist each as well.

Colliver took a team-high four shots against Belmont Abbey, two of which were on target. In addition to Karmonick's three shots, the quintet of Conti, Christman, Megan Rude, Erin Roland and Grace Maynard each produced one shot.

Goalkeeper Grace Burker made three saves over the duration of the game to help preserve the victory.

Trailing 1-0 out of the halftime break, Slippery Rock quickly went to work offensively as Conti first converted a pass from Christman into the game-tying goal against her former team at 32:15. The goal marked the third quickest score into the second half by a Rock athlete over the last 19 years.

Colliver then put The Rock ahead just two minutes later when she redirected a Del Vecchio attempt past Parker to give Slippery Rock a 2-1 lead in the 35th minute. However, the Crusaders responded to SRU's scoring barrage when Jessica Rybicki scored at 38:25 to tie the contest once again.

The game remained tie over the remainder of the third and fourth quarters as SRU successfully defended three shots, including a save by Burker with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation that sent the game into overtime leading to Karmonick's eventual goal.

Slippery Rock ended the game with advantages over the Crusaders in total shots (12-8), shots on goal (7-5) and penalty corners (6-4).

SRU returns to The Rock to host Franklin Pierce University 4 p.m. Friday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium for a non-conference game on Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day.
