BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned a 4-0 victory over Millersville University Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament at the Burt Reese Tennis Center in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
With the win, Slippery Rock moves on to face Indiana University (Pa.) in the league's championship match Saturday. The contest will mark The Rock's fourth appearance in the PSAC Tournament championship match all-time and its second in the last three completed seasons.
SRU's victory also improved The Rock's record on the season to 15-6 overall while Millersville drops to 15-8. Friday's match featured two of the top teams in the Atlantic Region as Slippery Rock entered the contest ranked fourth with Millersville close behind at No. 7 in the most recent set of regional rankings.
As they have done so many times this season, SRU's top doubles pairing of
Lois Page and
Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez started The Rock off strong courtesy of a 6-4 victory over Julia Wallace and Noelle Htwar in the top flight. The triumph was the 18th of the season for Page and Gonzalez Sanchez.
SRU proceeded to capture the doubles point from the third flight where
Georgie Lancaster and
Zoe Heed bested Chloe Abrmowitz and Maria Ojeda, 6-2. Heed and Lancaster are in the midst of a six-match winning streak and are 14-2 in 2022.
With the doubles point already belonging to SRU, the second flight match between
Teddi Isherwood /
Gabriela del Val del Toro and Kelsey Heckert / Jasmine Morris was halted with the contest tied 4-4.
del Val del Toro continued her string of great play to open the singles portion of Friday's match by way of a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory over Htwar from the third flight. del Val del Toro's win increased her winning streak to 11 matches and represented her 25th victory of the season, the fifth most in a single-season in program history.
Heed then brought The Rock one point closer to competing for a conference title when she registered a solid 6-0, 6-1 win against Heckert in fifth-flight play.
Page, SRU's lone senior, finished off the team victory by defeating Morris 6-4, 6-1 in the first flight, clinching the match with her 19th win of the season and the 124th victory of what has been a great collegiate career.
Slippery Rock also held leads in the second (Gonzalez Sanchez vs. Ojeda), fourth (
Nuria Martin Lopez vs. Wallace) and sixth (Lancaster vs. Abrmowitz) flights when Page clinched the match-deciding point for SRU.
The SRU – Indiana championship match will give The Rock a chance to avenge a regular season loss to the Crimson Hawks. A victory would give Slippery Rock its first conference championship since the 2003 season.
While both The Rock and IUP have already all but clinched spots in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, Saturday's winner will also earn an automatic berth into the national tournament.
Slippery Rock and Indiana are scheduled to begin the 2022 PSAC Tournament championship match 1 p.m. Saturday at the Burt Reese Tennis Courts on the campus of Bloomsburg University.
