MILLERSVILLE, Pa. –
Katie Dlugosz took a feed from
Brooke Kelly and scored the game-winning goal in triple overtime to lift the Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 13-12 win on the road at Millersville University Saturday in a non-conference game at Chryst Field.
The two teams entered the game with matching 5-2 records and were evenly matched for just about the entire contest Saturday, trading numerous momentum swings throughout the day. Slippery Rock jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter and led 7-4 with 5:45 to play in the first half, but Millersville rallied back with a 3-0 run that included a goal as time expired to tie the game at 7-7 at the break.
Neither team would lead by more than two goals for the entire second half as they combined for four ties and four lead changes. Millersville started the fourth quarter on a 3-0 run to open up a 12-10 lead with 4:25 to play, but Slippery Rock answered with two goals in the final 3:19 to even things up at 12-12 at the end of regulation.
The teams would battle through two six-minute overtime periods and into a third extra session before the game-winning goal was scored. Millersville rattled off five total shots in the overtime periods, but could not find the net, while SRU registered three shots.
Millersville won the draw control to open the third period and had a chance at the winner, but Grace Cobaugh's shot was saved by
Gillian O'Rourke, who sprung SRU loose for a clear attempt. Kelly found Dlugosz in the circle and she buried the game-winner 1:20 into the third overtime to lift SRU to a 13-12 win.
The win marks a third straight for SRU and improves the team to 6-2 on the year, while dropping the Marauders to 5-3 overall.
Millersville finished the game with a 35-33 advantage in total shots and a 20-12 advantage in draw controls. The Rock posted a 23-20 edge in ground balls and a 9-4 advantage in caused turnovers.
O'Rourke came up huge in overtime, saving four shots and allowing Slippery Rock the chance to secure the win. She finished with a game-high 15 saves and also grabbed four ground balls while improving her record to 6-2 on the year.
Emily Benham paced the attack for SRU with three goals and three assists after firing a team-high 12 total shots in the game.
Jamie DiCarlo added three goals and two assists and Dlugosz finished with four goals on five shots.
Kelly added one goal and one assist and
Molly Buettner and
Eryn Little each scored one goal to cap the scorers.
Taylor Baiers led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while
Charleigh Rondeau finished with a team-high six draw controls.
Millersville got four goals each from Cobaugh and Ashlyn Simonetti to lead the attack and Morgan Scott tallied 12 total saves in the game.
Saturday's game marked the first of four straight road games for Slippery Rock, which will return to PSAC West action Wednesday with a 4 p.m. game at Gannon University.
