SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a 4-3 overtime victory over Frostburg State University Friday night at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Â
The non-conference victory snaps a two-game losing streak and improves The Rock's overall record in 2022 to 6-5 while Frostburg State drops to 7-5 on the year.
Â
Freshman
Grace Maynard posted a pair of goals for The Rock while
Leslie Colliver and
Bailee Christman also produced one goal each with Christman's being the game-winning score in overtime. Christman also assisted on one goal as did
Alex Held,
Haley Metcalf and
Kayla Del Vecchio.
Â
Frostburg State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead following one quarter of play before The Rock went to work on chipping away at the deficit.
Â
The comeback started when Colliver scored her fourth goal of the season off of a Held assist in the 27th minute as The Rock and Bobcats ultimately went into halftime with FSU holding a 2-1 advantage.
Â
Out of the break, Maynard recorded back-to-back goals at 35:50 and 47:00 to give Slippery Rock a 3-2 lead with 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The goals were the first points of Maynard's career.
Â
However, SRU was unable to finish off the win in regulation as Ashlyn Cave scored the equalizer for Frostburg State with under three minutes left to play to send the contest into overtime.
Â
The Rock and Bobcats traded possession for opening six minutes of extra time as neither team were able to record a shot until Del Vecchio found Christman with a perfect entry pass into the circle, allowing Christman to beat FSU goalkeeper Madison Manalansan to her right before finishing off the game-winning goal at 66:10.
Â
Del Vecchio's assist was her sixth of the year, which is already tied for the fifth-most in single-season program history.
Â
Defensively, Rock goalkeeper
Grace Burker made two saves in the victory.
Â
For the game, Slippery Rock held advantages over Frostburg State in total shots (18-8), shots on goal (11-5) and penalty corners (9-5). Maynard placed all three of her attempts on target with Roland and Colliver adding two shots on goal each as well.
Â
Friday's win was SRU's second overtime victory of the season. Slippery Rock also defeated Belmont Abbey College 3-2 in overtime earlier in the year.
Â
Slippery Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition when it travels to No. 5 Millersville University for a 3 p.m. game on Oct. 21.
