Rock plays IUP to 1-1 tie

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team tied Indiana (Pa.), 1-1, Wednesday on the road in a PSAC West match.

INDIANA, Pa. – After leading the contest for 86 minutes, The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team tied Indiana University (Pa.), 1-1, Wednesday on the road in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match.

The tie moves SRU's overall record to 4-2-8 and its PSAC West mark to 3-2-7 while the Crimson Hawks become 3-4-5 overall and 2-4-5 in the division. Slippery Rock and IUP finish their regular season meetings of the year having recorded a tie in both contests as they battled to a 2-2 draw earlier this season.

The Slippery Rock offense was paced by Libby Zacharyasz who netted her first collegiate goal, and SRU's lone score of the contest. Zacharyasz ended the match placing all three of her shots on target.

Aiding in the offensive efforts were Jaime Dermotta, Sydney Patrick, Ashley Rea and Kayla Swope each with one shot on goal apiece.

Emma Yoder helped The Rock remain undefeated through now six-consecutive matches, after making four saves over 90 minutes and allowing one goal.

Slippery Rock controlled the attack over the opening 18 minutes of the contest taking five shots, two of which were on target, while holding the Crimson Hawks to just three total and one to the gloves of Yoder.

The Rock's fifth shot was a header attempt by Zacharysz, which ricocheted off the post and back into her possession, before she landed a cross-goal shot past IUP goalkeeper Vanessa Berlin for a 1-0 Rock lead at 18:29.

SRU continued its attack, dominating possession for the remainder of the half, as it took five additional shots and earned four corner kicks. The IUP defense was able to successfully defend each attempt, sending The Rock into halftime with a one-goal advantage.

Coming out of the break, Slippery Rock began its search of an insurance goal as it placed its opening two shots of the half on target, but to no avail.

With less than five minutes to go, Hanna Scardina fired a shot that bounced off Yoder before Kristen Finnerty collected the deflection and netted the equalizer.

Slippery Rock quickly looked for a last-minute surge with Dermotta shooting SRU's final shot of the contest. However, Berlin was able to make the save to preserve the 1-1 tie.
For the game, The Rock held advantages over IUP in total shots (15-12), shots on goal (7-5) and corner kicks (7-1).

Slippery Rock continues its road swing with a divisional match against Pitt-Johnstown 12 p.m. Saturday. Earlier this season UPJ earned a 2-1 victory over The Rock at James Egli Field.
