Rock blanks Findlay for 1-0 road win

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout victory against Findlay Sunday afternoon in a non-conference road match. Alex Plimmer recorded the game-winning goal off an assist from Ramses Minaya.

FINDLAY, Ohio - The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout victory against the University Findlay Sunday afternoon in a non-conference road match at DeHaven Field in Findlay, Ohio.

Slippery Rock improves to 1-0-1 on the season with the win while Findlay drops to 1-1-0 in the defeat.

Alex Plimmer recorded what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 58th minute off an assist from Ramses Minaya. The assist was Minaya's third in 21 games at The Rock.

Goalkeeper Hossam Aly had another exceptional performance, tallying five saves in the shutout victory.

While Findlay held advantages over The Rock in total shots (13-7), shots on goal (5-4) and corner kicks (5-4), Plimmer's second-half coupled with a rock-solid defensive effort was more than enough to give SRU its first win of the year.

Seven different Slippery Rock players contributed to the seven shots taken during the match as Minaya, Plimmer, Alejandro Fernandez, Luke Gildea, Harry Griffin, Mo Kanani and Brian McCarthy all posted attempts.

Sunday's shutout was the 14th such for The Rock in 39 games under the guidance of head coach Kevin Wilhelm.

The opening half appeared to be controlled by the Oilers as they recorded nine shots to The Rock's four. However, only three of Findlay's attempts were on target, all of which were stopped by Aly, as SRU and the Oilers went into halftime in a scoreless tie.

The second half got off to quick start with back-to-back shot attempts by the Oilers followed by a corner that was successfully defended by The Rock. Soon after in the 58th minute, Minaya set up Plimmer for the game's lone goal.

Following Plimmer's score, Slippery Rock's defense took over and limited Findlay to just two shots with only one being a on goal, an attempt that was stopped by Aly in the 86th minute, to seal the victory.

Slippery Rock continues its non-conference schedule with a home match 4 p.m. Wednesday at Egli field against Walsh University.
