SLIPPERY ROCK Pa. - Mo Kanani scored the lone goal for Slippery Rock University men's soccer team to secure a 1-0 home victory over non-conference opponent Daemen College at James Egli Field Saturday afternoon.
With the win SRU improves its record to 2-0-2 while the Wildcats move to 1-2-0. The win extends Slippery Rock's current unbeaten streak and just the seventh time it has gone unbeaten in its first four matches since 1980.
Hossam Aly recorded four saves on all four shots that he faced, not allowing a single goal, thus recording his second shutout victory of his career.
SRU was paced on offense by Kanani who recorded the only goal of the contest.
Alejandro Fernandez recoded two shots on goal while Luke Gildae,
Paul Devlin Arturo Pla Hernandis and
Dan Schearer all took one shot on goal apiece.
The Rock got off to an early start as Kanani netted his first goal of the season, scoring a header off of a
Brian McCarthy assist just seven minutes into the first half of play. SRU would continue its offensive attack taking a commanding 12 more shots.
Slippery Rock defense settled into a battle with the Wildcats and did not allow a single shot through the first 45 minutes.
The first 10 minutes of the second half found to be an evenly matched bought with The Rock and Daemen trading shot for shot although SRU held the 1-0 lead. Slippery Rock would re-take the reigns posting four back-to-back shots on goal, putting goalkeeper Marcos Escobar to the test.
Defensively, SRU remained grounded as it successfully defended three consecutive corner attempts in the final 25 minutes of the closing half before receiving two corner kicks of its own and being able to produce a shot on goal.
The final minute of play was rounded out by one more strong defensive push defending a corner with four seconds left on the clock securing the 1-0 victory over the Wildcats.
Slippery Rock held a large advantage over Daemen in total shots (20-6) while also leading in shots on goal (7-4) and corners (10-8).
SRU returns to action 12 p.m. Wednesday when it heads to District of Columbia for its fifth consecutive non-conference matchup.
