BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Representatives from the Slippery Rock University women's tennis team concluded their time at the 2021 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships Saturday on the campus of Bloomsburg University.
SRU was led by
Lois Page, who advanced to the semifinals of singles tournament before being eliminated.
Page opened the day by defeating Mercyhurst's Naomi Jahr 6-2, 6-0 in the tournament's quarterfinals to setup a semifinal contest against Natahsa Munday of Indiana (Pa.), who was able to end Page's championship bid with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Also competing in the singles draw Sunday was
Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and
Gabriela del Val del Toro.
The 2020-21 All-PSAC West honorees were edged in the quarterfinals as del Val del Toro lost to Munday 6-3, 6-3 and Gonzalez Sanchez was narrowly defeated by top-seeded Karolin Kirchtag of IUP. Gonzalez Sanchez took the opening set from Kirchtag, 6-4, before losing the second set 6-1 and the tiebreaker 10-8.
Page and Gonzalez Sanchez also advanced to Sunday/s semifinal round of the doubles bracket before losing to Kirchtag and Katy Gradyon, 8-3.
With her five overall wins at the PSAC Championships, Page is now just two wins away from becoming the 13th athlete in program history to record 100 victories (singles+doubles).
The PSAC Championships marked the end of the individual portion of The Rock's 2021-22 schedule. SRU begins dual-match competition with non-conference home matches at the SRU Tennis Courts Oct. 8 against West Chester (3:30 p.m.) and Oct. 9 versus Millersville (12 p.m.).
