BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Slippery Rock University women's tennis standouts
Lois Page,
Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and
Gabriela del Val del Toro combined to record eight victories Saturday on day one of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships on the campus of Bloomsburg University.
With the undefeated showing Saturday, all three of The Rock's representatives at the championships will move on to the quarterfinals of the singles tournament Sunday while Page and Gonzalez Sanchez will take part in the semifinals of the doubles bracket.
The Rock opened the day with doubles success as Page and Gonzalez Sanchez, the tournament's third seeded pairing, bested Maddy Reeves and Delani Wolever of Lock Haven University, 8-1, followed by an 8-3 win in the quarterfinals over Millersville's Kelsey Heckert and Jasmine Morris.
Page and Gonzalez will meet top-seeded Katy Grady and Karolin Kirchtag of IUP in the semifinals with the winner playing either Noelle Hitwar and Julie Wallce of Millersville or Indiana's Natasha Munday and Joanna Stralka in the championship finals.
As the No. 2 seed in the singles draw, Page earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Shippensburg's Kendall Winters in the first round. She then earned a hard-fought 7-6 (3), 6-0 win against West Chester's Tori Alexander to setup a quarterfinal bout against Mercyhurst's Naomi Jahr on Sunday.
Gonzalez Sanchez ousted Millersville's Maria Ojeda 6-2, 6-0 in the first round followed by another sound 6-0, 6-2 victory in the second round to advance to the quarterfinals where she will play top-seeded Karolin Kirchtag, who won last weekend's Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Atlantic Region singles title.
del Val del Toro rounded out The Rock's perfect trio Saturday starting with a near shutout of Lock Haven's Mia Shuler 6-0, 6-1 in addition to a 6-2, 6-0 second round besting of West Chester's Elaina Lee. del Val del Toro now turns her attention to Munday in the quarterfinals.
Sunday's schedule begins with Page and Gonzalez Sanchez in their doubles semifinal match at 8 a.m. with the singles quarterfinal contests slated to get underway at 10:45 a.m. followed by the semifinal matches at 2 p.m.
