Slow start haunts Rock in loss to Edinboro

A slow start proved too much to overcome for the Slippery Rock women’s basketball team in an 88-59 loss to Edinboro Saturday at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A slow start proved too much to overcome for the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team in an 88-59 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division loss to Edinboro University Saturday afternoon at Morrow Field House.

Edinboro (10-7, 8-5 PSAC West) controlled the first quarter as the Fighting Scots made 11 of its first 17 shots while forcing seven Slippery Rock (5-14, 3-10 PSAC West) turnovers on the way to a 25-6 lead after the opening 10 minutes of competition.

To its credit, Slippery Rock fought back to cut Edinboro's lead to as little as 10 points late in the second quarter thanks to an impressive 24-15 run, but the Fighting Scots put any thoughts of an SRU comeback to rest when they closed the first half on a 7-1 run to push what ultimately turned out to be an insurmountable lead back out to 16 points en route to the eventual 29-point win.

Daeja Quick led The Rock against Edinboro with team-highs of 13 points and three assists in addition to three rebounds and one steal.

Fellow starters LeeAnn Gibson and Madison Johnson added eight points apiece as did the reserve duo of Anyah Curd and Brittany Andrews. Curd and Gibson also tied for the team lead in rebounds with four each while Johnson delivered three steals.

Carol Weber turned in one of the best performances of her young career with four points, three blocks, two rebounds and one steal in 10 minutes. Brooke Hinderliter and Kasch Harris rounded out SRU's top performers Saturday. Hinderliter scored five points and made three steals while Harris contributed four points and two assists.

Slippery Rock finished the game shooting 40.7 percent (24-for-59) from the field overall and 63.6 percent (7-for-11) at the free throw line. Defensively, SRU did force Edinboro into 17 turnovers, the second-highest amount by a Rock opponent this season.

Michaela Barnes paced Edinboro with a game-high 25 points. Cheniya Sharpe, the PSAC's leading rebounder, went for a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Edinboro, which shot 47.1 percent (32-of-68) from the field overall, forced SRU into 18 turnovers while also enjoying a +13 rebounding margin.

Edinboro concluded the game with 23 second chance points and 22 points off turnovers.

Slippery Rock will look to bounce back from Saturday's loss when it hosts Gannon University 5:30 p.m. Jan. 29 at Morrow Field House.
