SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's basketball staved off a late comeback bid by Millersville University to earn a 77-75 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victory Wednesday night at Morrow Field House.
Â
Slippery Rock (4-12, 2-8 PSAC) led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter before Millersville (5-10, 2-8 PSAC) slowly began to chip away at The Rock's advantage, eventually taking a one-point lead of its own on three occasions in the fourth quarter.
However, SRU answered back every time the Marauders took a lead and ultimately closed the game on a 13-10 run to earn the two-point victory.
Â
The senior duo of
Brooke Hinderliter and
Madison Johnson carried The Rock offensively on Wednesday as Hinderliter scored a game-high 29 points to go with nine rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal while Johnson went for 23 points, nine rebounds and a steal of her own. Hinderliter and Johnson combined to go 20-for-41 from the field.
Â
Fellow seniors
LeeAnn Gibson and
Karington Ketterer also had solid nights for SRU. Gibson scored eight points while Ketterer posted five points, seven rebounds and one block. Ketterer has now racked up seven blocks over Slippery Rock's last four games.

Â
Slippery Rock appeared poised to run away with the game early on after scoring the contest's first six points and building its lead up to 37-24 midway through the second quarter before Millersville proceeded to shave six points off SRU's lead going into halftime followed by a third quarter in which the Marauders cut The Rock's advantage to 56-54 heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Â
The Rock and Millersville traded baskets for nearly the entirety of the fourth quarter and with 1:48 left to play the Marauders found itself leading 73-72.
Â
However, SRU put the game away down the stretch as Hinderliter connected on a pair of free throws to give Slippery Rock the lead back, 74-73, followed by a Gibson basket on SRU's next possession that extended The Rock's lead to 76-73 and forced Millersville to call a timeout with just under a minute showing on the clock.
Â
Millersville went on to make a pair of free throws of its own on its ensuing possession and would even rebound an SRU miss with 10 seconds to play to set up a final chance, but a potential game-winning 3-point attempt by Courtney Dimoff grazed off the rim to Ketterer, who in turn made one of two free throws with less than a second to play to seal the win.
Â
Slippery Rock enjoyed one of its top shooting performances of the season, as it connected on 43.6 percent (30-of-69) of its field goal, attempts to help overcome an uncharacteristically off night at the foul line (13-of-22 / 59.1 percent).
