PAINSVILLE, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team lost to Lake Erie College on the road, 3-0, Saturday evening.
Slippery Rock (0-1-1) was led on offense by
Abdallah Bangura who recorded a team-high two shots on goal.
Alejandro Fernandez added two shots for SRU as well.
Dan Schearer,
Anthony Werth and
Ale Okuma all added one shot apiece.
Lake Erie struck first in the 24th minute when Ameer Saade scored on a cross from Sander Van der Sluijs to take a 1-0 lead on what was Saade's first goal of the season.
The Rock defense settled in, not allowing another shot until the 45th minute when Van der Sluijs recorded his first goal of 2019 on a pass from Saade. The pair finished with a combined two goals, two shots on goal and two assists.
Lake Erie would seal a home victory when Tom Akinola notched his first score of 2019 on an assist by Javier Borreguero in the 54th minute.
Slippery Rock had several close calls on offense, but shots on goal by Okuma in the fourth minute, Werth in the 33rd minute and two by Bangura in the 39th minute were all saved.
Storm goalkeeper Tom John had a solid performance, recording four saves in 90 minutes. SRU's
Matt Hunsberger recorded two saves while allowing three goals in 78:05 before giving way to
Derek Hoffman who played the final 11:55 in what was his collegiate debut.
Lake Erie held edges over The Rock in total shots (12-7) and shots on goal (5-4). Both teams had four corners.
Slippery Rock will look to bounce back from Saturday's loss when it hosts Shepherd University 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at James Egli Field in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest.

• The 3-0 loss to Lake Erie marks the first time SRU has allowed three or more goals since last season on the road against Millersville.
• The Storm now take the lead in the all-time series over Slippery Rock with a record of 3-2-1 including taking three of the last four matchups with The Rock.
