SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Mansfield University Tuesday with a pair of wins at Jack Critchfield Park.
Â
After taking game one, 11-6, SRU finished off the doubleheader with a 9-4 victory in game two. The victories stretch The Rock's winning streak to four games and sends SRU into its weekend series against Pitt-Johnstown with an overall record of 12-15.
Â
As a team, The Rock recorded 22 hits over the two games and went 10-for-24 with runners in scoring position. Â
Â
The quartet of
Joe Campagna,
Frankie Jezioro,
Luke Trueman and
Abraham Mow recorded hits in both games to lead The Rock.
Â
Campagna, the reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Athlete of the Week, continued his hot streak by going  5-for-8 with three runs scored, seven RBI and two home runs over the doubleheader. Campagna, who has reached base in 27 straight games, has now hit five home runs in his last six contests.
Â
Jezioro stretched his hitting streak to 17 games after a 3-for-6, three-run, two-RBI, two-double performance Tuesday. Mow made the most of his two hits, going for a triple in game one and a double in game two.
Â
Trueman continued his strong freshman year with a 4-for-5, three-run, three-RBI doubleheader.
Colin Cain did a little bit of everything against Mansfield. After going 2-for-4 with two runs, four RBI and a home run in the opener, Cain came back as the starting pitcher in game two where he pitched 3.2 innings on the way to the win.
Â
GAME ONE: Slippery Rock 11 – Mansfield 6
Slippery Rock carried a two-run lead through the middle portion of the opener before exploding for seven runs in the fourth inning en route to an 11-6 victory against the Mountaineers.
Â
Campagna got The Rock started on a high note with a solo home run in the first inning. Cain, Jezioro and
Jon Kozarian added to SRU's tally in the second when Cain produced a run-scoring single followed later in the inning by back-to-back RBI by Kozarian and Jezioro on fielders choices.
Â
Slippery Rock maintained its 4-0 lead until the fourth inning when Mansfield cut SRU's advantage in half with a pair of runs. However, any thoughts of a Mountie comeback were promptly dashed in the bottom of the frame when The Rock rattled off seven runs with the highlights of the inning being a two-run triple by
Ray Scala and a three-run home run by Cain, his third of the year.
Â
Mansfield went on to score four unanswered runs to end the contest, but never seriously threatened The Rock's lead.
Â
SRU used four pitchers in the victory.
Joe Dombrowski (2-0) made his first start in a Rock uniform. He went 3.1 innings, scattering two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters.
Â
Derek Boben pitched an inning of relief, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks before giving way to
Alex Worthington who tossed 0.2 scoreless innings. Trueman came to throw the final two frames, allowing one unearned run.
Â
Campagna, Cain and Trueman all had two hits in game one with Campagna and Cain both belting home runs and Cain posting a career-high four RBI.
Â
GAME TWO: Slippery Rock 9 – Mansfield 4
Slippery Rock carried over its momentum from game one into the nightcap by darting out to a quick start in game two with seven runs over the first two innings as it cruised to a 9-4 sweep-clinching victory.
Â
SRU produced 12 hits in game two, its fifth highest total of the season, while matching a season-high with two double plays in the field.
Â
Campagna drove in five runs on three hits and finished just a double shy of hitting for the cycle. His home run in game two gives him a season-best seven long balls in 2019. Trueman went a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored, two RBI and a walk. Jezioro chipped in a pair of hits, two runs and an RBI as well.
Â
Kozarian, Mow,
Zach Mancz,
Alex Robenolt and
Cody Cooper all registered hits as well. Mancz's hit was the first of his collegiate career.
Â
As was the case in game one, The Rock once again used four pitchers in game two. The freshmen trio of Cain,
Andy McClymonds and
Ricky Mineo accounted for 5.2 of the innings while Worthington made his second appearance of the day to throw 1.1 scoreless innings to close out the game.
Â
Already leading 1-0 following an RBI-triple by Campagna in the first inning, Slippery Rock wasted no time putting the game out of reach with six runs in the second.
Â
Mansfield briefly rallied back in the fourth inning via a three-run frame only for The Rock to once again answer back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own a two-run opposite field home run by Campagna.
Â
Mansfield's final true chance of a comeback came in the sixth when it scored one run and loaded the bases with two outs, forcing Mineo from the game in favor of Worthington, who proceeded to strikeout Dom Lopez thus ending the threat and effectively the game as neither team scored in their final respective sets of at-bats.
Â
Slippery Rock will start a four-game Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division crossover series against Pitt-Johnstown with a home doubleheader Friday at Jack Critchfield Park. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
