SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team dropped a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division games Saturday afternoon against Seton Hill University at the SRU Softball Complex. After losing game one, 3-1, The Rock dropped game two, 10-2. Prior to the games, Slippery Rock honored the careers of seniors
Megan Brown,
Andria Copelli,
Caitlyn MacKelvey and
Kailey Myers.
Camie Shumaker pitched solid in the circle, but
Leah Vith's RBI single was not enough to overcome an early three-run deficit in the game one loss.
In game two, SRU was down by three early and cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the fifth, but the Griffins used a seven-run seventh inning to defeat The Rock.
The losses drop Slippery Rock's record to 18-25 overall and 8-10 in PSAC West games. SRU falls to fifth place and unfortunately gets knocked out of playoff contention. Even if SRU improves to 10-10 and ties with Edinboro at 10-10, Boro would have the first tiebreaker after it swept Slippery Rock in four games this season.
Game One: Slippery Rock 1 – Seton Hill 3
SHU's runs in the first and second inning would prove to be too much for The Rock as they scattered six hits for one run.
The Griffins tallied a run in the first on a Jenna Osikowicz single to score Brooke Bower.
Devyn Terry, Seton Hill's game one hurler, helped her cause with the bat in the top of the second with an RBI single to score Nichole McClendon. Later in the frame, the bases were loaded for Osikowicz to get hit by a pitch allowing Terry to come home and give SHU a 3-0 lead.
SRU's lone run was in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases juiced, Vith singled to bring home pinch-runner
Cortney Claypoole to make it a 3-1 SHU lead.
Slippery Rock held the Seton Hill scoreless in the top of the seventh and aimed to knot the game up in the bottom of the frame, but Terry retired the side in order, winning the game 3-1.
Terry (W, 14-6) pitched he complete-game six-hit shutout allowing the one run while striking out five.
Shumaker (L, 12-10) got the loss surrendering three runs on 11 hits and one walk while punching out three.
Game Two: Slippery Rock 2 Seton Hill 10
The Griffins scored three runs in the third, and SRU cut the deficit to one in the fifth, but Seton Hill registered a seven-run seventh and held on for the win.
With a runner on third in the second, Ashley Boehm hit a sacrifice fly to score Ashley Vargas. Brooke Bower would later triple to score Meghan Miller and, on an errant throw, Bower would score to make it 3-0.
SRU got on the board in the top of the third. Brown got on base via a walk and stole second.
Maggie Moore then roped a single to left center to score her.
Brown got things started again in the fifth with a walk. After an
Adeline Nicholson single, Brown would come around to score cutting it to 3-2 in favor of Seton Hill.
The big blow came in the seventh inning for The Rock when Seton Hill's Bower homered to lead off the frame. The Griffins later loaded the bases and Sam Estupinian singled in a run. Then, it was Terry's turn to single allowing McClendon to score making it 6-2. Boehm then walked in a run and Bower singled making it 8-2. Osikowicz reached on a fielder's choice and on an errant throw, Boehm scored and Terry scored giving Seton Hill a lead, 10-2.
The Rock would be held scoreless in the bottom of the inning falling in game two, 10-2.
Chloe Sharman (L, 6-9) took the loss going surrendering six runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks over 6.1 innings pitched.
Samantha Greco (W, 11-8) got the win hurling the complete game surrendering two runs on six hits and five walks.
