Rock sweeps doubleheader against California (Pa.)

The Slippery Rock softball team swept a PSAC West doubleheader with California (Pa.) in a pair of road games played at the SRU Softball Complex Tuesday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team swept a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader with California University of Pennsylvania in a pair of road games played at the SRU Softball Complex Tuesday.

After a game one pitcher's duel resulting in a 2-1 win for SRU, The Rock took advantage of some fielding mistakes by California in game two, earning the win, 9-4.

Megan Brown and Kailey Myers tallied two hits apiece backing Camie Shumaker's complete-game victory in game one.

In game two, Cortney Claypoole registered two doubles and two RBI while Chloe Sharman got the complete-game win.

SRU improves to 10-13 overall and 2-0 in PSAC West play while California falls to 4-14 and 0-2 in divisional games.

Game One: Slippery Rock 2 – California 1
Game one was quite the nail-biter with both pitchers getting in and out of trouble.

The Vulcans struck first in the bottom of the first following a leadoff double from Brooke Wilson. She advanced to third on a wild pitch in Taylor Robblee's at-bat and Robblee eventually hit a sacrifice fly to drive her in.

In the following frame, SRU's Adeline Nicholson and Myers got on with a pair of walks. Regan Hozak would later reach on an error loading the bases with one out. Caitlyn MacKelvey later flied out to center field. The center fielder then made an errant throw allowing Nicholson to score tying the game, 1-1.

SRU took the lead in the top of the third after Brown led off with a single. She then stole second getting into scoring position. The steal was the 61st of her Rock career which puts her alone at second on the Slippery Rock all-time stolen base list. Nicholson would later line a two-out RBI single giving SRU the 2-1 advantage.

California put the tying run on second base in the bottom of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, but Shumaker worked out of danger holding on for the win, 2-1.

Shumaker (W, 7-6) earned the win hurling the complete game surrendering one run on five hits and four walks while punching out nine.

Emilee Downing (L, 1-3) pitched the complete game as well taking the loss allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out six.

Game Two: Slippery Rock 9 – California 4
Game two proved to be a back-and-forth contest until SRU added five runs on three errors in the fourth, and three runs on an error in the top of the seventh breaking the game open.

The Rock scored first in the top of the first inning after an Alexa Guglielmino leadoff single. With two outs, Maggie Moore put the ball in play, but it was misplayed by the second baseman allowing Guglielmino to come around and score.

California answered back in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run from Robblee.

The Vulcans took the lead in the bottom of the second after Alexa Pastor was hit by a pitch to leadoff the frame. After she got to third later in the inning, Sierra Besser-Paul hit a sacrifice fly allowing her to score giving CALU the lead, 2-1.

The Rock answered back in the top of the fourth inning with a five-spot. SRU loaded the bases for Claypoole who hit a two-RBI double to right field. With runners on second and third, MacKelvey put the ball in play and the shortstop threw it away allowing Myers to score. Guglielmino later reached on an error sending MacKelvey across home giving Slippery Rock a 6-2 advantage.

After California scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, SRU added three more in the top of the seventh. With one out, Slippery Rock hit three consecutive singles to load the bases. Hozak then hit a pinch-hit double to center scoring two runs. Lydia Baird followed and reached on an error allowing Hozak to come across pushing SRU's lead to 9-3.

California added a run in the bottom of the fourth on a Robblee solo homer, but Sharman settled in and SRU held on for the win, 9-4.

Sharman (W, 3-2) hurled the complete game surrendering four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three.

Robblee (L, 3-5) took the loss going 4.0 innings allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk while punching out three.
