PITTSBURGH – The Slippery Rock University softball team suffered a two-game sweep at the hands of Point Park University Wednesday afternoon at Fairhaven Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After falling, 1-0, in game one, SRU dropped the second contest, 5-1.
SRU tallied just three hits in the first contest and surrendered an unearned run on its way to losing its first ever game to the Pioneers.
In game two, PPU hurler, Katie Tarr struck out 15 of the Rock batters she faced and Slippery Rock scored just one run losing the contest.
Slippery Rock's losing streak is now up to five straight games and SRU is 12-19 on the season.
Game One: Slippery Rock 0 – Point Park 1
Camie Shumaker allowed just the one unearned run in the game one defeat, while The Rock received just three hits.
Megan Brown,
Adeline Nicholson and
Leah Vith were The Rock's only hitters. Brown also registered a stolen base.
The only run scored occurred in the fourth inning. PPU's Carissa Scekeres got on base and was driven in on a misplayed ball in the outfield put in play by Maddie Horn.
The Rock looked to tie it up in the sixth, but a mistake on the base paths allowed
Aubrey Allen to hit into a double play to end the threat.
SRU put a runner on second in the top of the seventh, but did not score and Point Park took the first contest.
Shumaker (L, 8-9) took the loss going 6.0 innings allowing the one unearned run on nine hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Ashley Iagnemma (W, 7-7) got the win pitching the complete-game shutout striking out nine hitters and walking one while surrendering just three hits.
Game Two: Slippery Rock 1 – Point Park 5
Point Park's hitters came up clutch with some timely hits and The Rock could not get going as they scored just the one run in the top of the seventh.
Becca Roesch registered two of Slippery Rock's four hits including a solo shot. Nicholson and
Regan Hozak added one hit apiece in the loss.
Point Park scored first in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Horn to plate Alicia Egner.
In the third, Hailey Leitner ripped an RBI double to make it 2-0 in favor of Point Park scoring Tiffany Edwards.
Julia Hoon would chase
Chloe Sharman from the game in the fifth ripping a two-run homer to put the Pioneers ahead, 4-0.
Point Park's scoring ceased after the sixth following an RBI single from Courtney Blocher scoring Scekeres to give PPU a 5-0 advantage.
Roesch tallied her first home run of the 2019 campaign in the seventh, but one was all The Rock got falling to Point Park, 5-1.
Sharman (L, 4-5) took the loss going 4.2 IP allowing four earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five.
Tarr (W, 8-5) earned the victory tossing the complete game striking out 15 batters and allowing just four hits and one walk.

Slippery Rock will return home for a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division games against Gannon Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
