CARY, N. C. - The Slippery Rock University baseball team had its four-game winning streak snapped in an 8-6 loss against Saint Thomas Aquinas College Tuesday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
Â
The loss drops The Rock's record to 5-4 on the season overall while Saint Thomas Aquinas improves to 4-7 with the win.
Â
Slippery Rock scored four runs over the fourth and fifth innings to erase an early 4-2 deficit and take a 6-4 lead, but a rough four-run bottom of the sixth proved to be The Rock's undoing as the Spartans rallied back to earn a two-run victory.
Â
Every player in The Rock's lineup recorded at least one hit on Tuesday including the trio of
Frankie Jezioro,
Luke Trueman and
Jon Kozarian who all posted two-hit performances with Jezioro driving in a pair of runs and Trueman adding one RBI via a double as well as a stolen base.
Â
Joe Campagna went 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI to extend his hitting streak to nine games in addition to walking three times. Like Campagna,
Mike Collins also went 1-for-2 with a run scored while walking three times.
Â
Ray Scala,
Tyler Merigliano,
Joe Sibeto and
Colin Cain all registered one hit apiece as well. Scala is one of two Rock players, along with Campagna, to have reached base safely in all nine games this year.
Â
SRU used five pitchers Tuesday. Starting pitcher
Ryan Tapp gave up four runs in 1.1 innings before giving way to
Derek Boben, who worked around two hits and three walks to not allow a run while striking out four batters in 2.2 innings.
Â
Andy McClymonds came on for Boben to throw 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits before being subbed out for
Alex Worthington (0-1) in the middle of the sixth inning. Worthington surrendered two more runs before getting out of the frame.
JT Wolke pitched two scoreless innings to close out the day for The Rock.
Â
Saint Thomas Aquinas was led by Chris Ruiz, who tallied two RBI in the victory.
Â
Slippery Rock continues its time at the USA Baseball National Training Complex 11 a.m. Wednesday against Dominican College.
