Rock earns two wins on Monday at NTC Tournament

The Slippery Rock softball team earned two victories on Monday at the NTC Softball Tournament in Clermont, Florida. After winning 2-0 against Concord in game one, SRU tallied a comeback win in walk-off fashion over Caldwell, 2-1.

CLERMONT, Fla – The Slippery Rock University softball team earned two victories on Monday at the National Training Center Softball Tournament in Clermont, Florida. After winning 2-0 against Concord University in game one, SRU tallied a comeback win in walk-off fashion over Caldwell University, 2-1.
 
Camie Shumaker was outstanding in the circle in game one earning the complete-game shutout victory. She was aided by a fifth inning two RBI single from Kailey Myers to propel Slippery Rock to a 2-0 win over the Mountain Lions.
 
In game two, Slippery Rock needed some timely hits late to earn the win. With The Rock down by one in the sixth, Megan Brown hit an RBI single to tie the game. The game would go into extra innings and freshman Maggie Moore came up big with a two-out walk-off single scoring Alexa Guglielmino to win the game, 2-1.
 
Shumaker also picked up the win in game two and has been dominant thus far in 2019. In seven appearances (five starts), she carries a 1.63 ERA (10 ER in 43.0 IP).
 
SRU's two wins Monday were its first two of the Spring Games in Florida and improve the team's record to 3-8.
 
Game One: Slippery Rock 2 – Concord 0
The Rock registered just five hits, but recorded the timely two RBI single in the fifth inning from Myers. Shumaker then pitched two scoreless frames en route to the victory.
 
Concord had its chances to score early in the bottom of the first. With two runners on and two outs, Madi Cupp was called out at first to end the inning.
 
The Rock aimed to take the lead in the top of the third inning following a leadoff walk from Aubrey Allen. Caitlyn MacKelvey then doubled to right field, but Allen was cut down at third base for the second out. Brown then flied out to right field to end the inning.
 
In the fifth, Allen got things started again with a single. MacKelvey aimed to bunt her over, but was Allen was thrown out on the fielder's choice. MacKelvey stole second and Brown singled. Brown would get to second base on defensive indifference and Myers would single to left right after scoring both MacKelvey and Brown to give SRU the lead, 2-0.
 
Concord would put the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Shumaker pitched out of danger to pick up the win.
 
Shumaker (W, 2-4) hurled the complete-game shutout scattering five hits and punching out eight.
 
Laura Thompson (L, 3-2) took the loss for Concord. She pitched a complete-game as well surrendering two runs on five hits and striking out three.
 
Game Two: Slippery Rock 2 – Caldwell 1
Slippery Rock was propelled to victory by some clutch play late in the game. The Rock had just six hits, but four of them came in the last three frames. Shumaker also pitched in game two, and held Caldwell to just one run.
 
Scoring didn't start for either team until the fourth inning. With two outs, Nora Conway singled and then stole second. Following a walk from Anyssia Ramirez, Daniela Solis singled to score Conway giving Caldwell the lead, 1-0.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, MacKelvey walked on an eight-pitch at bat. She later advanced on a wild pitch and Brown would rip a single scoring MacKelvey and tying the game, 1-1.
 
Following scoreless frames for both teams in the seventh, Caldwell nearly took the lead in the top of the eighth. With Lauren Stansell placed at second, Maya Rodriguez singled up the middle and Guglielmino cut down Stansell at the plate with a cannon of a throw to keep the tie intact. Shumaker would then retire the side giving SRU a chance to win it in the eighth.
 
Claypoole would be placed at second and MacKelvey bunted her over to third. Following back-to-back intentional walks of Guglielmino and Brown, Myers hit into a fielder's choice for the second out. Moore was next and ripped a single to score Guglielmino for the game-winning hit.
 
Shumaker (W, 3-4) earned the win going 8.0 innings surrendering one run on seven hits and punching out six.
 
Jessie Johnson (L, 0-0) took the loss going 0.2 innings allowing one run on one hit.
 
Caldwell's Sara Bearden received a no-decision in the contest after going 7.0 innings allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven.
 
UP NEXT
Slippery Rock will have a day off and get back to action Wednesday with games against Millersville and Urbana. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
